BOORANG | Fadi Al Nasser
A Organic Urbanic Seat UAE / 2016
The word “Boorang” actually consist of two parts and each came from one precious thing,
First one is “Boo” that comes from the Bamboo, this organic natural material that was used in one part and the main one of this seat, while the other one comes from the “Boomerang” which is an Australian hunting tool.
It’s shaped as a curved yet flat piece of wood and can be thrown so that it will return to the thrower, and traditionally it was used by the Australian Aborigines.
Boomerangs have also been used as a sport and entertaining tool, and such things should be rewarded in a way or another, and I thought of giving it a new use that benefits everyone.
The Boorang consist of two pieces, the seat and the back piece, and both comes together to form the final shape, while they start from the same point only to end at the same point on the other side.
That been said, when I was designing the Boorang I actually tried to put in mind the main issue that we “humans” are facing now, which is pollution.
So I thought of the best way to make my seat actually fits in nature by using the Bamboo for the main part, while making use of the solid waste that is hard to dissolve in nature such as plastics and nylon for the other part.
While designing the Boorang I also put into consideration the comfy of the users and to make the best use of it, and that was actually achieved by the smooth shape that fits with the other part forming the final shape without using joints or natural poisonous glues, and this was possible by making the seat consist of three bases that keeps it stable and still onto the floor.
Boorang comes in many colors using the same material, one that gives it the veneer color while the other gives it the white glossy texture, and both can be applied only on the non-bamboo part.
Boorang is a perfect piece of furniture that can be used in public spaces and blend into the nature in shape and appearance, and comfy for the passengers and users.
