Hold the line - A flexible tool for an adaptable city

Embracing the theme of the adaptable city, our project proposes for the city of Molfetta a flexible system which can help the site realize its full potential. It designs a new waterfront, unified and compact, with a single action, a line, running through the entire site. But, at the same time, it is declined in different ways, paying attention to every specific need.
It consists in equipping the waterfront with a single system made by metallic portals; therefore it is not a constructed object, but a light structure, which can be realized in an easy and less expensive way, without using more land, but trying to develop the existing.
The base module is a square of 3,60x3,60m; its repetition forms the road, for bicycles and pedestrians; so they can have a dedicated space, separated from the cars, through the entire waterfront. The module can be equipped in several ways, first of all with wooden strips to protect the walk from sun and wind; but also nearby the main walk, it can duplicate the line and host little cafes and commercial activities, such as stalls. The pieces of furniture for the shops are incorporated inside the module. It can also be used for the facilities of the shores, such as locker rooms or cabins, toilets, and even a lifeguard tower. It can be customized by people, and used for instance on the occasion of the local religious celebration of the Madonna dei Martiri as a support for the traditional lightning. Where is needed the frame can also reach different heights, creating multiple levels, always wheelchair accessible, through ramps and elevators.
We can divide the site in six thematic areas, three in the west part, three in the east one. Each one has specific resources to develop and problems to solve, so the project takes care of them in six different declination of the action. This ideal division and the system of the portals permit to realize the project in several phases, or singles interventions, in different moments.
The six attractors are:
for the ex-Colonia, historically used for bathing during summer, a place for children and a public shore, to keep its vocation, but at the same time making it inhabited during the entire year through the sporting and recreational camp;
nearby the Inps building, a spacious square, which will provide characterization to the area, a public space for the many residential buildings of the surroundings, and a safe access to the bathing;
for the waterfront till the old town, poorly used by people, mainly crossed by cars, the real challenge is to make people stop by and spend time by the waterfront and not only go through it: so we provide a constructed wetland, able to treat and purify the water from the street, before pouring it into the sea, creating at the same time some pleasurable gardens, and three public pedestrian piers, with cafes and stalls;
a walk running just above the sheds of the shipyards, giving people the opportunity to observe the workers; the portal frame also infiltrates between the sheds, creating, besides the continuous walk, little cafes and recreational areas, and a museum of the shipyards, to protect the tradition, in the aim of making the yards cease to be an element of division and become the fulcrum of the day and nightlife of the area.
next, in the vacant and abandoned area, an administration office for the reception of tourists, based inside a cylindrical structure made of our portal frames, and some recreational areas;
for Secca dei Pali, used only for particular events, such as circus shows, we provide pools and an artificial beach, to make it accessible during all the year. Moreover: a structure of terraced steps which can be used both as a trampoline but also as a point of view: of the bird nests inside the new harbor, of the fireworks of particular celebrations, and of the panorama of the old town.
Our main aim is to give the waterfront back to the citizens, making them live and inhabit the site, making the most of all the existing but not valorized resources. The entire area has to remain free, giving artisans and small business owners the possibility to open little commercial activities, using the system of stall provided by the project, without privatizing the land or the access to the sea. The spirit is to involve and educate the population in a process of self organization, self maintenance, and sharing of the waterfront.

Abbracciando il tema della città adattabile, il nostro progetto propone per Molfetta un sistema flessibile che può aiutare la città a realizzare a pieno il suo potenziale. Disegna un nuovo waterfront, unificato e compatto, con una sola azione, una linea, che attraversa l'intero sito, ma che, allo stesso tempo, si declina in modi diversi, facendo attenzione ad ogni specifica esigenza.
Nel dettaglio consiste nel dotare il lungomare con un unico sistema di portali metallici; non è quindi un oggetto costruito, ma una struttura leggera, realizzabile in modo semplice e poco costoso, senza consumare ulteriore suolo, ma cercando di sviluppare l'esistente.
Il modulo base è un quadrato di 3,60x3,60m; la sua ripetizione va a formare un percorso per biciclette e pedoni, dedicato e separato dalle vetture, lungo tutto il litorale. Il modulo può essere attrezzato in diversi modi, sia semplicemente con listelli di legno per riparare da sole e vento, ma anche duplicando la linea del percorso principale e ospitando dentro i portali piccoli caffè e attività commerciali, con gli arredi incorporati all'interno del modulo. Può ospitare anche le strutture per la balneazione: spogliatoi, servizi igienici e cabine, e anche una torretta per bagnino, e può essere personalizzato dalla gente, per esempio in occasione della festa religiosa locale della Madonna dei Martiri come supporto per le luminarie tradizionali. Dove è necessario il telaio può raggiungere anche altezze diverse, creando più livelli, mantenendo sempre la totale accessibilità, attraverso rampe e ascensori.
È possibile dividere il sito in sei aree tematiche, tre a ponente, tre a levante. Ognuna ha risorse specifiche da sviluppare e problemi da risolvere, e di conseguenza il progetto prevede sei diverse declinazioni dell'azione. Questa divisione ideale insieme alla struttura di portali permettono la realizzazione in più fasi, o in interventi singoli, in momenti diversi.
I sei attrattori sono:
per l'ex Colonia, storicamente utilizzata per la balneazione estiva, un luogo studiato per i bambini e una spiaggia pubblica, per mantenere la sua vocazione, ma allo stesso tempo per abitarla durante tutto l'anno grazie alle strutture sportive e ricreative;
vicino al palazzo Inps, una piazza, che fornirà la caratterizzazione mancante all’area, ma soprattutto uno spazio pubblico per i numerosi edifici residenziali dei dintorni, e un accesso sicuro alla balneazione;
per il lungomare fino al centro storico, per lo più attraversato da automobili, la sfida è fare in modo che la gente si fermi a vivere il luogo, e non lo consideri solo zona di passaggio: si prevedono così delle vasche fitodepurative, in grado di trattare e purificare l'acqua della sezione stradale, prima di riversarla in mare, creando allo stesso tempo alcuni giardini, e tre moli pedonali pubblici, con caffè e bancarelle;
una passerella che corre appena sopra i capannoni dei cantieri, dando ai passanti la possibilità di sbirciare i lavori; il sistema dei portali si infiltra anche tra un capannone e l’altro, creando piccoli caffè e un museo dei mestieri navali, per proteggere la tradizione, con lo scopo di fare in modo che i cantieri cessino di essere un elemento di cesura e diventino piuttosto il fulcro della vita giornaliera e notturna della zona.
accanto, in un’area vuota e abbandonata, un ufficio amministrativo per l'accoglienza dei turisti, all'interno di una struttura cilindrica fatta di portali, e alcune aree ricreative;
Per Secca dei Pali, usata solo per particolari eventi, come il circo, il progetto prevede piscine e una spiaggia artificiale, per rendere l’area accessibile durante tutto l'anno. Inoltre: alcune gradonate che possono essere utilizzate sia come trampolino, sia come un punto di osservazione: dei nidi di uccelli creatisi all'interno del nuovo porto, dei fuochi d'artificio durante particolari celebrazioni, e del panorama della città vecchia.
Il nostro obiettivo è quello di restituire il lungomare ai cittadini, facendo vivere ed abitare il litorale, sfruttando al meglio tutte le risorse esistenti, ma non valorizzate. L'intera area deve rimanere libera, dando ad artigiani e piccoli imprenditori la possibilità di aprire piccole attività commerciali, utilizzando il sistema dei chioschi previsto dal progetto, senza privatizzare né il suolo né l'accesso al mare. Lo spirito è quello di coinvolgere ed educare la popolazione in un processo di auto-organizzazione, auto-manutenzione, e condivisione del lungomare.
