Public Area as Living Artwork

"The brightest space can be experienced during the day, though, becomes the darkest at night"

In the commercial space, a place was thought, where artificial light does not exist and people can sense the natural time. It is a small outer space, yet gives a great influence and impact to the rest of the inner space. We, as an architect, pursue to offer space and environment, which becomes an art work itself.

A branding project called 'Vegegarden Cafe' was a commercial building renovation project. Because of its low ceiling and wide depth, there was difficulties of bringing natural light into the space and to ventilate. The ceiling was drilled and opened to outside next to the vertical circulation between ground and first floor. This simple act changed the environment, completely. The ventilation and the natural lighting, these two elements vitalized the public space. The four seasons were experienced from inside and at the same time, the opening frames the sky, which becomes an art work. The functional, aesthetic and lyrical art exist within the created space.

Interior

Gray bricks stacking, wood material and white fabric were used for the interior design in order to give simple but warm atmosphere. Provided drinks and food are seasonal, which we intend to accentuate the colorful menu to the simple background. The colors of the furniture and the art wall are also selected to balance with the surrounding. The 'Muto', the mascot of the cafe is an abbreviated word for 'Mudeung Mountain Tokki', meaning the rabbit in the Medeung Mountain.

A membranous material with a sound absorption function was used for finishing touch on the ceiling to make a quite atmosphere. The material played a few roles not only to absorb sounds but also to hide the pipes of air conditioners and sprinkling devices.
