In order to deal with the increasing amount of freight transport in a fast and safe manner, the widening of the current Lek Canal and the construction of a new lock chamber are necessary. The current lock complex is a national heritage site and along the Lek Canal various objects of the New Dutch Waterline (NDW) are located. The NDW is the largest national heritage site in the Netherlands which will be nominated by the Dutch government for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Because of the widening of the Lek Canal, the existing objects in the area cannot remain in their current location. A real dilemma, since the relocation of the objects will put a mayor strain on the NDW-project as a whole. The ‘literal’ relocation of these objects is not an option since this is contrary to the authenticity of the NDW. Bureau B+B decided to create a readable landscape in which both original story and proposed changes are evident. In their vision the concrete objects were placed in such a way as if they were literally thrown aside to make way for new economic developments. The objects will be placed very carefully like monuments and ‘objets trouvés’ within the landscape and alongside the new dike line.
