The inspiration for this new house in East Hampton came from an initial conversation with the owner about her appreciation of the Kauffman Residence - Richard Neutra’s 1947, Palm Springs masterpiece.  While the simple volumes and open, light-filled interiors are clear, not so obvious is the weaving of the outdoor spaces, both manmade and natural, through the entire experience of the house.

Located on a flat, flag lot with neighbors close to both sides, this 4,000 square foot house is configured of two primary volumes arranged in an ‘L’ that frame the expansive, southeastern view of an adjacent, agricultural reserve.  This view serves as a backdrop to a series of distinct outdoor spaces.  This arrangement maximizes the ability to modulate the various sunlight requirements of both indoor and outdoor public space as various entertainment functions migrate throughout the day – swim, breakfast, sun, lounge, sleep, etc.

Entry, through a glass void in the northern side of the house, is approached by a raised, stone walk, under an exaggerated uplit canopy.  The foyer, at the terminus of the outdoor pool, separates public space to the left and private to the right.  An open floor plan contains living room, dining room and kitchen stretched along the length of the outdoor patio space.  Large expanses of south facing glass help to dissolve interior/exterior relationships and frame views of the adjacent field while the predominately solid northern walls create privacy while modulating temperature.
