APARTMENT REMODELING IN A NEW BLOCK OF FLATS | Eva Kubíčková
Prague / Czech Rep. / 2015
The clients bought this flat in the west part of Prague direct from the developer. From the onset they knew they would have to wait and raise funds before the remodelling of the apartment could begin. They bought the flat with standard fittings and waited six years before actualising their new design.
The size of the flat is adequate but its original division into two rooms with a kitchen wasn’t suitable for a family of four. The family room with the kitchen was basically just a play room for the children. The other room was just a bedroom and was used only at night. Neither the parents nor the children had their own space. That was the biggest challenge. The goal of this project was to create a great space for the children, a bedroom for the parents, to create a stylish bathroom, and organize and maximize the storage area in the cloakroom and the entrance hall.
To this purpose, made-to-measure cabinets were designed for use in the entrance hall to create space for most of the family’s clothes and shoes. Part of this unit is an upholstered bench. The cloakroom can easily contain the washing machine and the drier and all cleaning products as well.
The bathroom and lavatory got a new look too. The tiles were replaced by polished grey concrete, while the sink was paired with the shelves in Staron. The bathroom cabinet with the mirror contains all the toiletries. The kids’ room is a boys’ play area. Each boy has his own working table and storage area for his favourite toys and books. The furniture is set along the walls, so the boys have enough space in the middle of the room for adventure games.
The living room was divided into two separate spaces by the made-to-measure bookcase. It looks light and lets natural light into the rest of the room. Some of the storage space is accessed from the living room side, while the rest is accessed from the bedroom side. There is plenty of storage space, not only for important documents but also for extra blankets etc.
Part of the refurbishment involved changing the doors and floors. Instead of cheap laminated flooring, the clients now enjoy a nice rich oak floor. The doors to the living room are made from opaque glass. All the new furniture and doors are in white lacquer, so as not to stand out too much.
