Amalfi Amalfi / Italy / 2014
Introduction
This extensive and extremely panoramic residence with two entrances is located on the first floor of an antique building right in the center of Amalfi.
The intention of the owners which became the mission of the project, was to divide the residence in two vacation houses to be allocated to their two daughters, therefore, the first approach was addressed to the distributional and functional aspects of the rooms. The commitment was then projected towards the choices of the finishes and the design of the furniture that were of primary importance in the space of the resized single apartments.
In both residences - very different in the finishes which reflect the different taste of both sisters – the main protagonists are the vaulted frescoed ceilings, which were hidden by the previous refurbishement in the 1960's, and the sea that on particularly clear days makes your gaze deeply sink up to Punta Licosa. These two elements were the source of inspiration of the project.
HOUSE "A"
The apartment consists of two bedrooms both with bathrooms, a spacious living room partially with loft, a kitchen area and a bathroom.
The precious floor made of Neapolitan cotto dominates the living room, it's embellished with decorations in white enamel which stands out against the frescoed ceiling with its soft shades that go from cream color to white and strengthened by tones of grey.
Even the stairway that goes up to the mezzanine has a primary role: its white facade appears in the upper part, as if suspended, because it has a horizontal groove by the extension of one of the wooden steps. This groove, along with the crystal railing, makes it extremely light.
The cotto floor goes from the living room to the master bedroom, while the decorations in white enamel which is in the middle of the living room becomes an embroidery that surrounds the room. The closet doors, all white, are carved with an ornament that is inspired by the decoration of the bathroom tiles, and interspersed by oak elements.
Other elements worthy of note which are in common in both residences are the “flowers” that penetrate in the loft and in the false ceiling which are covered by glass through which curious gazes can admire the frescoes but also lets in the sunlight in the bathrooms.
The finishes – the light oak color, the white lacquering and the cream color of the walls – are all repeated in all the rooms of the house, and they have been chosen in harmony with the colors of the ceilings, while in the bathrooms the white and blue recall the color of the sea.
The only exception is in the bathroom of the guest room where restored tiles from the old restoration have been placed, these tiles are hand decorated with extraordinary modern designs.
