Noe Valley 1 | Feldman Architecture

This remodel of a classic San Francisco Victorian set out to respect the character of the original house while giving it a modern sensibility. The street façade was kept largely intact; only a bright green door with a translucent polycarbonate panel hints at the contemporary interior. The house’s main level features an open plan and retracting metal doors that allow the deck, family room, kitchen and eating nook to function as one seamless indoor/outdoor room. An open-riser stairway leads upstairs to two bedrooms and a master suite with vaulted wood-paneled ceilings and large skylights. The lower level includes an office and media room, divided by a large barn door, and opens directly onto the backyard. Throughout the house, built-ins, wainscoting, and crafted woodwork connect the renovated spaces to their architectural past. A palette of grays, white, steel and glass, with occasional pops of color, reflects the straightforward yet innovative synthesis of old and new.
