Viewpoint in Pulpit Rock / VISIONS | Michela Quadrelli
Architecture Competition by reTHINKing Rogaland / Norway / 2015
The purspose of the project was to change the relationship between the visitor and the surronding nature. I propose a new way to experience the place and look at the natural landscape.
There aren't physical boundaries between architectural space and natural environment that compenetrate each other. No rooms are completely closed, except the service area ones. Limits are visual: by high walls in bare concrete you can appreciate differents views of the scenery, but never all the landscape at ground floor. This is possible thanks to the walls: they continue beyond the limit of the rock, so you can't have a full view, not even on the edge. By a steep ramp, that allows you to discover the landscape gradually, you can arrive on a observation platform upstairs where there's a 360-degree view.
In this way, the visit of the place turns into a journey of discoveries and visions.
Shapes of the structure are clear and straight in order to remember the natural profile of the Pulpit Rock. The bare concrete remembers the natural texture of the rock: it blends without hiding.
