Based on the concepts of simplicity and transparency, AvroKO focused on bringing a conscious approachability to the design coupled with the use and celebration of natural materials for Barry Sternlicht’s first solo hotel project with Starwood Capital Group.

Approachability was achieved by leaving much of the space unadorned and available for moments of breath and pause as exemplified by punched out window seats in the guest rooms with views of Central Park, glass enclosed showers that offer guests a welcome connection to natural light and a feeling of openness as well as embracing remnants of the existing building architecture including exposed concrete ceilings and floors, exposed steel columns and beams, and uncovered terracotta block masonry walls. Natural materials were brought into the space in their raw form including natural woods, stones and textiles, celebrating their natural markings, veining, knots and color variation. Locally sourced materials were used wherever possible including a salvaged water tank wood branded with its species and source used to encapsulate the wall behind the bed.
