Rigodon | Tommaso Guerra

Among the picturesque alleys of the newly renovated small historic village of Rieti, nearby the church and the library, Tommaso Guerra has been invited to design the new restaurant and café Rigodon.

In a culturally rich literary and musical environment, the Rigodon café integrates harmoniously, with a guise of the magnificent epoch, when theatre was amongst the most exciting of arts.

The atmosphere recalls an italian theatre of the begging of the last century.

 We enter the main hall through a pair of red velvet curtains. Here a small island of sofas and armchairs finely refurbished and upholstered with damask fabric invites us to take a brake, have a drink, as we wait for our dinner.

Under a grand crystal chandelier near an antique black wooden piano, we sit at our tables, deigned and custom built with a very dark hickory. The atmosphere is very elegant, warm and romantic. The teal green walls are split by a wooden cornice covered in gold leaf. The wall lights are in bronze and crystal.

At the far end of the main hall beyond the velvet bench and small tables, a luminous structure hangs from the wall. The stage of an old town fair. It's an illumination, built by the famous artisan of Lecce, Apulia, Torquato Parisi.

Between antique posters of plays and classic opera, we get closer to a recess that encloses a bookcase. We may refer to the titles on the shelves, but sooner or later come to realize that the bookshelf is really a door, that accesses to a secret room. A speakeasy, a small and intimate space. 

Here the atmosphere of the foyer transforms, we enter back stage. The walls, are now charcoal grey, and they house ropes and bollards that drop from timber frames hanging from the ceiling. 

The spirits counter is set-up in a shipping crate. The furniture is metal and wood of a simple and sturdy design. 

Hanging from the timber frames are old theatre backdrops. Hand painted reproductions of woods, villas and skies, inspired by the set design of a play. And so are the feather costumes eased on the mannequins, waiting to be used in the next change of scene.

In un piccolo borgo storico recentemente ristrutturato tra i vicoli più suggestivi di Rieti, vicino alla chiesa e alla biblioteca comunale, Tommaso Guerra è stato invitato a disegnare il nuovo ristorante e caffè Rigodon.

In un ambiente denso di attività culturali, letterarie e musicali, il Caffè Rigodon vuole inserirsi armoniosamente, presentandosi con una veste che sa di epoche favolose, quando il teatro era tra le più eccitanti delle arti.

L'atmosfera è quella di un teatro Italiano di inizio secolo.

Attraverso tende di velluto rosso entriamo nella sala principale, dove una piccola isola di divani e poltrone, fatte restaurare e tappezzate in tessuto damascato, ci invita a sostare, bevendo un drink in attesa della nostra cena.

Sotto un grande lampadario di cristallo vicino ad un antico pianoforte in legno nero, sediamo ai nostri tavoli disegnati e fatti realizzare in noce scurissimo. L'atmosfera è molto elegante, calda e romantica. Le pareti verde petrolio sono interrotte da una matita in legno intarsiato e trattato in foglia d'oro. Le applique sulle pareti sono in bronzo e cristallo.

In fondo alla sala principale, dopo la panca in velluto e i tavolini, l'ultima parete ospita una grande struttura luminosa: l'allestimento che trovavamo nelle vecchie feste di paese. Si tratta di una luminaria, costruita dal famoso artigiano Leccese Torquato Parisi.

Tra locandine di antichi spettacoli teatrali e opere classiche, ci avviciniamo ad una nicchia che ospita una libreria. Possiamo consultare dei titoli ma prima o poi scopriremo che la libreria è in realtà una porta, che da accesso ad una stanza segreta. Uno speakeasy, un ambiente più piccolo ed intimo.

Qui l'atmosfera del foyer subisce una trasformazione: entriamo dietro le quinte di un palcoscenico. Le pareti, ora color antracite, ospitano una serie di corde e bitte che scendono dalle graticce di legno sospese dal soffitto.

Il banco degli spiriti è allestito su una cassa da imballaggio, gli arredi sono in ferro e legno dal design resistente ed essenziale.

Appesi alle graticce sono stati dimenticati dei vecchi fondali teatrali, riproduzioni dipinte a mano di boschi, ville e cieli, ispirate alle scenografie di uno spettacolo. Anche i costumi di piume, adagiati sui manichini, sono in attesa di essere usati al prossimo cambio di scena.
