The REAGENT is the compression of university discourses made available on the square in front of the university. As with the Agora in Ancient Greece, a place of assembly and public debate, science is made visible in the public sphere. The university itself assumes a position within the urban area and can be experienced through the sculpture. Art as a medium is well-suited to bringing together science and the general public, to raising mutual awareness and to letting one influence the other. The idea of creating a work of art in this location was developed as part of the conference “Cities and Landscapes. Considering New Orleans and Innsbruck as Multiple Landscapes” (24-26 June 2015).

The sculpture stands for the relationship between the human spirit (culture) and material (nature) as well as the interactions between life sciences and humanities. The world consists of poles and can only be experienced together through these. The naked bodies and artificial, cramped space of the test tube surrounding them expresses this pressure and tension. The container is sealed by a lid. What happens if it is opened? Which reaction can we expect?

Cities are also containers – social laboratories. At the same time they are multiple and open formations. Different groups mix within them, whose identities are closely woven into the city fabric. Cities themselves are bodies in all their different facets. The tension between openness and limitation, between the chance of creating something new and maintaining the blockade, remains. The last reference to decide is the individual itself in its naked vulnerability.

Der REAGENT ist die Verdichtung universitärer Diskurse, die auf dem Universitätsvorplatz zur Disposition gestellt werden. Im Sinne der griechischen Agora, der Idee der öffentlichen Disputation, wird Wissenschaft im öffentlichen Raum sichtbar gemacht. Die Universität selbst wird im Stadtraum positioniert und in der Skulptur erfahrbar. Kunst bietet eine geeignete Möglichkeit, Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit miteinander in Beziehung zu bringen, sie aufeinander aufmerksam zu machen und auf beide zurück zu wirken. Die Idee, ein Kunstwerk an diesem Standort zu realisieren, entstand im Kontext der Tagung „Cities and Landscapes. Considering New Orleans and Innsbruck as Multiple Landscapes” (24.-26. Juni 2015).

Die Skulptur steht für die Beziehung zwischen dem menschlichen Geist (Kultur) und der Materie (Natur) und das Zusammenwirken der Naturwissenschaften mit den Geisteswissenschaften. Die Welt besteht aus beiden Polen und ist nur aus diesen gemeinsam erfahrbar. In den nackten Körpern und dem künstlichen, begrenzten Raum des Reagenzglases, der sie umgibt, wird diese Spannung sichtbar. Der Deckel hält den Behälter verschlossen. Was geschieht, wenn er aufgemacht wird? Welche Reaktion ist zu erwarten?

Die Stadt ist ebenfalls ein Behälter, ein Laboratorium des Sozialen. Zugleich ist sie eine multiple und offene Formation. Verschiedene soziale Gruppen vermischen sich in ihr und deren Identitäten sind verwoben mit der städtischen Materialität. Die Stadt selbst ist der Leib in all seinen Facetten. Die Spannung zwischen Offenheit und Begrenzung, zwischen der Chance, etwas Neues zu schaffen oder in der Blockade zu verharren, bleibt ungelöst. Die letzte Referenz, die dies entscheidet, ist jede/r Einzelne in seiner nackten Verletzlichkeit.
