SITE AREA AND THE EXISTING BUILDING

The project area is located in the outskirts of Bologna, in an area occupied mainly by industrial buildings and agricultural land, not far from Caab (Centro Agro Alimentare di Bologna). The object of intervention is an industrial building built in the 70s, with a rectangular plan divided into two parts: the first (North), the highest, is on two levels; the second (the stock) is a single volume divided internally into two parts by a row of pillars. The structure is made of reinforced concrete.

THE REUSE OF THE EXISTING BUILDING

In a view of environmental sustainability, not only considered as use of systems that guarantee energy savings, but in a broader vision linked to reuse (which aims at the reduction of waste, in this case rubble), the project proposal includes a partial recovery of the existing building. The demolitions will relate only to the coverage of existing stock, the stairs in the volume at two levels, and a part of the interior walls. It was also envisaged the raising of the level of the stock, using all the existing pillars, and the expansion of the north volume of the existing building.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: WAVES and BUILDING INTO THE BUILT

Water is the central element of the entire project theme; for exemple we found water in acqua zone area and in day spa area. Water is a fluid and his movement generates a phenomenon known in physics by the name of WAVES. This term indicates a disturbance that comes from a source and propagates in time and space, carrying energy or momentum without evidence of associated displacement of matter. With the intent to create a link between the architectural design and the function that the building will accommodate, born the design idea of the project: WAVES. The two side elevations are designed as two waves, represented by a series of shading aluminium plates and crossed by a blue led light. Even the laminated wood beams follow the same architectural concept. Finally, north and south elevation are covered by perforated aluminum panels, with holes design symbolizing the drops of water falling.
