Landscape upgrade - Terminal Operational Building, Khalifa Port

Concept : DUNES

The semi-automated container terminal of Khalifa port is the first of its kind in the region, the uniqueness and dynamics of the terminal is reflected in the landscaped area surrounding the terminal operations building.

Wherever in the world, dunes are also dynamic environments, shaped and constantly changed by wind. At the coast they serve as natural protection against the sea where as in the desert create a dynamic, ever-changing landscape and offer shelter against the prevailing wind.

We have used the theme of dunes as base of our design, resembling on one hand the dynamics and on the other offering a place for leisure and relaxation.

As shaped by the wind, curved horizontal and vertical lines, at some parts highlighted with wooden beams, meander next to the building and leading visitors to the main entrance.

A combination of paving materials in earthy colors is used to further highlight the dynamics of a dune landscape.

Slopes planted with Pennisetum grass offer a sense of a dune landscape and protection against wind blowing over the open parking area behind.

Some trees and a pergola structure provide essential shade during the hot summer time while on other places one can enjoy the winter sun.

Benches some of which backed by slopes, create a comfortable place to enjoy a lunch break or just sit and relax.

Since water is precious, not only in the region but also in a natural dune landscape, the plant selection exists of drought resistant species that require less than average irrigation.

All together the concept offers a sustainable, appealing and functional landscape in a dynamic environment.
