The project is carried out in an underground space near the sea, with barely any outside lighting and in serious humidity conditions. However, the interior of the simply-built, very small structure — barely 55m2 — had a real monumental look, presided over by two octagonal stone pillars from which domes and vaults rise to cover the space and bear the weight of the upper floors.
The client had requested the creation of an open-floor space. However, this monumentality, coupled with the shortage of natural light and view to the outdoors, led to another proposal. The single-space concept could be maintained but with greater spatial complexity, by overlapping and intersecting two living spaces: a central, common, multipurpose space and a perimeter of small designated-use rooms (bedroom, dressing room, bathroom, storage room, kitchen and study). The walls do not reach all the way up to the ceiling so the vaults and domes are continuous and visible from anywhere. But from the ground level, up to the level marked by where the domes begin, the view is partially interrupted by partitions, creating an anticipation of what lies beyond on the other side, and giving contour to the inner world. The palette of materials is reduced. Floors and walls are white to bounce and reflect every beam of light that manages to enter through the few openings. The laminated pine dividing walls highlight the items in the centre of the space, while contrasting with the white surfaces of the existing walls. This is the serene canvas against which future users will splash the colours and textures of their furnishings and belongings.
Work has been slow-paced. Lack of ventilation and openings to the outside extended drying times for materials. We had to design and build a raised floor with several layers to ensure waterproofing and insulation. All surfaces and ceilings had to be sealed with double-action waterproof mortar to prevent moisture from leaking through. The level of indoor humidity was controlled with an underfloor heating and forced ventilation system connected to a dehumidifier. Gradually, materials started drying and the saltpeter started disappearing. When we removed the worksite floodlights in early summer we found that natural light filled the space and bounced on the walls nicely, creating a very pleasant and comfortable humidity-free space which seemed much bigger than its meagre 55 m2.

La intervención se lleva a cabo en un espacio subterráneo, cerca del mar, con apenas iluminación desde el exterior y en un estado previo que presentaba serios problemas de humedad. Aún así, en el interior de un edificio de construcción muy humilde, el espacio, muy reducido, de apenas 55m2, presentaba un aspecto completamente monumental, presidido por dos columnas octogonales de piedra sobre las que se elevaban cúpulas y bóvedas para cubrir el espacio y aguantar el peso de las plantas superiores.
El requerimiento por parte del cliente era crear un único ambiente, pero la monumentalidad de éste, sumada a la escasez de luz natural y visión exterior, condujo la propuesta a, si bien mantener el concepto de un único espacio, hacerlo mediante una mayor complejidad espacial donde se superponen y entrecruzan dos circulaciones: una central, a modo de espacio común sin una función específica; y una perimetral, a través de pequeñas estancias especializadas (dormitorio, vestidor, baño, almacén, cocina y estudio). Así, ningún paramento llega hasta el techo, y el orden de bóvedas y cúpulas es continuo y visible desde cualquier punto; pero por debajo, hasta la altura marcada por el arranque de las cúpulas, la visión es parcial, interrumpida por los tabiques, creando así expectación ante lo que hay más allá, al otro lado, conformando un mundo interior propio, donde una reducida paleta de materiales; suelos y paramentos existentes revestidos de blanco para rebotar y reflejar toda la luz que pueda entrar a través de las escasas aberturas; y madera contralaminada de pino, en contraste con las superficies existentes revestidas para destacar todo lo que queda en medio del espacio, queda a la espera de la invasión de colores y texturas de las pertenencias de los futuros usuarios.
La obra ha sido lenta, la falta de ventilación y de aperturas al exterior provocaba que el proceso de secado de los materiales se dilatara en el tiempo; fue necesario proyectar y construir un suelo elevado de varias capas para asegurar su impermeabilización y aislamiento; todos las superficies y techos tuvieron que ser selladas con morteros impermeabilizantes de doble acción para impedir la entrada de humedad; se implementó un sistema de suelo radiante y de ventilación forzada conectada a una máquina deshumidificadora para controlar el nivel de humedad interior. Pero poco a poco los materiales fueron secando, el salitre fue desapareciendo, y al quitar las luces de obra, y ya entrados en verano, pudimos comprobar que la luz natural entraba y rebotaba y creaba un espacio muy agradable y confortable, sin rastros de humedad, y que daba la impresión de ser bastante más grande de sus escasos 55 m2.
