The Txai House merges elements of the vernacular colorful Bahian Houses with the precise lines of Brazilian Modern architecture. Located in front of a beautiful beach in the city of Itacaré – in the Brazilian northeast – the site of Txai House reaches 13 meters above the sea level. This topographical condition allowed for, even with the existing treetops, a beautiful view of the coast.
To avoid excessive verticalization and still accommodate the entire necessity program, the house rests on two levels without any pavement overlapping. This solution ended up creating a new artificial configuration for the plot, as a second nature, which recomposes the original topography, now with the house settled.
On the lower floor, we have the living room. With a large veranda, all of the window frames can be entirely recessed. The living room then becomes an open space, protected by a large flat pre-stressed slab. The kitchen is joined to this social area, facing the dining room and contained within a wooden volume that also holds a small utility area and a washroom.
In front of the veranda-living-room, there is an infinity pool and a solarium with chaise-longs. In the back, a patio with vegetation ends up allowing for cross-ventilation in the area. The structural system was modulated in spans of 9.70m by 6.30m, in a rational domino system. On the roof of this first floor there is an open wooden deck with a wonderful view of the sea. On this second floor are also the bedrooms, located under the pitched roof in colorful wooden and stucco volumes.
There is no internal connection from the living room and the kitchen with the bedrooms. The trajectories therefore, are always done from the outside, with the garden as passage. The residents experience the climactic conditions while going from one to the other.
The bathrooms extend outside of the roof and are all opened to the outside, having their own individual gardens defined by walls, like patios. The doors in front of the rooms look out to a generous 2.5m-wide veranda where the hammocks rest on the recycled wood roof. The mashrabiya doors – a wooden latticed element, traditional in modern and colonial Brazilian architecture – shade the interior of the bedrooms, allowing the breeze to pass; and they can remain completely open for complete control of the interior light.
The materials used in the house are all local. Efforts were made to also have raw finishings that age well in the aggressive tropical coastal climate. In the case of the volumes, using a color chart inspired by the local houses, the architecture sought live and pure colors which, when applied on the wooden mashrabiya, contributes to the durability of the material in creating a thick layer of protection against the salt air.
The House Txai offers a radical experience of integration between the inside and out. It is a place to drink coconut water, swaying in the hammocks. The tropical atmosphere of Bahia impregnates all of the spaces and the contact with the garden is necessary in order to use the house, as it integrates the trajectories of quotidian life.

A Casa Txai funde elementos das coloridas casas vernaculares baianas com linhas precisas da arquitetura moderna brasileira. Localizado de frente para uma belíssima praia no município de Itacaré – no nordeste brasileiro – o terreno da Casa Txai sobe 13 metros a cima do nível do mar. Essa topografia permitiu que, mesmo mediado pelas copas das árvores existentes, fosse possível conseguir uma bela vista para a costa.
Para evitar uma excessiva verticalização e, mesmo assim, acomodar todo o programa, a casa repousou em dois níveis sem sobreposição dos pavimentos. Essa solução acabou por construir uma nova configuração para o terreno, como uma segunda natureza, que recompõe a topografia original, agora com a casa assentada.
No andar inferior, localiza-se a sala. Como uma grande varanda, todos os vidros e vedações podem ser completamente recolhidos. O estar se torna então um espaço aberto, protegido por uma laje plana protendida. Junto a essa área social fica a cozinha, voltada para a sala de jantar e contida dentro de um volume de madeira que comporta também uma pequena área de serviços e um lavabo.
Diante da sala-varanda, repousa uma piscina com fundo infinito e um solário com espreguiçadeiras. Nos fundos, pátio com vegetação configura ventilação cruzada no ambiente. O sistema estrutural foi modulado em vãos de 9,70m por 6,30m, em um racional sistema dominó. Sobre essa cobertura do primeiro andar, fica um deck de madeira descoberto de onde se tem uma bela vista do mar. Nesse segundo andar ficam também os quartos, locados sob um telhado em águas, em volumes coloridos de madeira e estuque.
Não há qualquer conexão interna entre o pavimento da sala e da cozinha com os quartos. Os percursos internos da casa, assim, são sempre feitos externamente, usando o jardim como passagem. Os moradores experimentam as condições climáticas ao transitarem entre interior e exterior.
Os banheiros prolongam-se para fora do telhado e são totalmente abertos para o exterior, tendo seus jardins individuais definidos por muros, como pátios. As portas da frente dos quartos dão para uma generosa varanda de 2,5m de largura onde ficam penduradas redes, presas no próprio forro feito com madeira reciclada. As portas de muxarabis – elemento treliçado de madeira, tradicional da arquitetura moderna e colonial brasileira – sombreiam o interior dos quartos, deixando passar a brisa; podem também ser inteiramente abertas para total controle de luz no interior.
Os materiais empregados na casa são todos locais. Privilegiou-se também acabamentos brutos, que envelhecem bem no agressivo ambiente litorâneo tropical. No caso dos volumes, em uma paleta de cor inspirada nas casas locais, a arquitetura buscou cores vivas e puras que, aplicadas sobre a madeira dos muxarabis, contribui para a durabilidade do material ao criar uma camada espessa de proteção contra maresia.
A Casa Txai oferece uma radical experiência de integração entre interior e exterior. É um lugar para tomar uma água de coco, balançando-se nas redes. A atmosfera tropical da Bahia impregna todos os espaços e o contato com o jardim se torna parte necessária do uso da casa, ao integrar os percursos da vida cotidiana.
