Tanner Street Pub Conversion | Baca Architects
High-density development in central London Southwark / United Kingdom
Planning consent has been granted for the conversion of a disused public house into five new high-quality apartments. The design respectfully contrasts the old with the new. The existing pub frontage will be sensitively restored, while the rear and roof will be rebuilt to a contemporary design in which the angular set backs create private terraces.
The historic front will be enhanced by the addition of a lightweight mansard. The existing unsightly rear extension will be replaced with an elegant design, conceived as a cascade of lightweight planted terraces set within brick bookends. Perforated metal balustrades are tapered to provide privacy yet allow sunlight into each unit. This contemporary refurbishment will bring the building up to 21st Century environmental and design standards while at the same time respecting its historical roots.
The ground floor will be elevated above the street level to let light into a semi-basement and raise the bedroom levels above the peak flood level. The lower floors, which will be used for a cinema room, living and utility, will be constructed using flood-resilient techniques developed by BRE, Baca and Aquobex through the research for Defra, entitled the Flood Resilient Property.
All of the apartments are designed to exceed the Southwark Residential Design Standards and have spacious south facing private amenity space.
The result is a unified building design that has been carefully considered to meet modern standards and requirements, as well as creating an elegant redevelopment that fits well with its neighbours and enhances the local setting.
