The Roc | D'Houndt + Bajart architects&associès

Achieved as part of the restructuring of an existing school complex consisting of two separate schools, the school restaurant “Roc" creates an architectural event in the heart of a city block. The building built on two levels is the meeting point between the two schools, and it gives the school complex the identity and the consistency that were lacking.

The main volume’s effect of the building is spectacular: a rock suspended over the void, both solid and aerial. The rocky aspect contrasts with the whiteness of the ground floor walls, the jambs of the woodwork and the ground, reinforcing the floating impression of the rock. A special care has been reserved to the graphic of the signage and the grids of the whole school complex that allow the new construction to exist in harmony with the original buildings.

In this very mineral set, the random alignment and the inflections of the courtyard’s supporting posts suggest a raid of the plant. This is the edge of a forest where parents can shelter waiting for their children to go out of school.

Thanks to the separation, the reduction of the ground surface area frees the rear surfaces of the land for a garden and an educational plot. The access to the teachers parking is through a hall under the connection between the kindergarten and the restaurant, in order to avoid children from crossing cars.

Perched symbolically a bit higher than the surrounding wall of the schools aisle, open to the sky, the school restaurant is a hybrid between the cave and the tree house. It’s the starting point of great stories.

For this school complex locked in a residences block and connected by a street as a corridor, the accomplishment of such a project meets the two desires of the architects: create a paradoxical urban situation, and deliver a message to children: everything is possible.

Made of shotcrete, molded and hand carved by a skilled craftsman, the facade reproduces perfectly the rock with its cracks, edges and rounding due to the erosion, geotectonic, and deformation of the strata. For the sake of integration into the urban landscape, the clay shade is similar to the clay brick, but the frame and the format of the rocks impose a change of scale. Here, we put forward the great outdoors, the canyons, and the mountains ... The adventure.

Get off the beaten track, the hybrid architecture of the building offers a transition between the red bricks environment and an ocher rocks landscape. As amended, the overview of the street opens up new perspectives.

It is an invitation to the opening, a stimulus to the imagination.

Surrounded by a high wall of red bricks, the schools path presents an unusual inclination for the region, which places the two buildings of the school complex into different levels. With the extension of each of the schools to the center, the building is built at the junction: the ground floor of the restaurant extends the elementary school, while the floor is in the same level of the kindergarten.

With its particular position, the building has several entry points that allow different types of users to access in optimum conditions. From the kindergarten, the connection goes unnoticed: the corridor leading off to the classes continues to reach directly to the restaurant. For the little ones, it is a guaranteed convenient and safe access: no need to put on coats to leave, nor to use the stairs.

The elementary school students enter the ground floor from their yard, and outside users access from the street to the building when this latter is used as a multipurpose room, according to the specifications listed for the project.

Friendly place, "Roc" is thus the confluence point par excellence: meeting of the two schools, center of the block, connection between the public and the private, confluence of the top and the bottom, of here and there.

From the inside, the restaurant has the great advantage of the elevation: the brightness. The variable size windows pierce the facade on the pace of an unknown partition up to now, while the gables are open by large plate glass windows. Majestic light shafts, smoothly, let in plenty of natural light.

The dining hall, bathed in light, has also an ideal acoustic comfort, thanks to a coating of plaster smoothed by hand, usually reserved for concert halls. The white surface, very elegant, highlights with its sobriety the artificial rock walls, identical to the outside.

To gain fluency, the junctions between the different surfaces are gummed: no joints, foot barriers, or links, which are elements into which the mind bumps. The continuous surfaces, the smooth transitions, and the lack of angles, aim to more freedom. No limits to the imagination.

Réalisé dans le cadre de la restructuration d'un groupe scolaire existant constitué de deux écoles séparées, le restaurant scolaire le « Roc » crée un événement architectural en plein cœur d'un îlot urbain. Le bâtiment construit sur deux niveaux est le point de rencontre entre les deux écoles et donne au groupe scolaire l'identité et la cohérence qui lui faisaient défaut.

L'effet produit par le volume principal du bâtiment est spectaculaire : un rocher suspendu au dessus du vide, à la fois massif et aérien. L'aspect rocailleux contraste avec la blancheur des murs du rez-de-chaussée, des ébrasements des menuiseries et du sol, renforçant l'impression de flottement du rocher. Un soin particulier a été réservé au graphisme de la signalétique et des grilles de l'ensemble du groupe scolaire, qui permettent à la nouvelle construction d'exister en harmonie avec les bâtiments d'origine.

Dans cet ensemble très minéral, l'alignement aléatoire et les inflexions des poteaux de soutènement du préau suggèrent une incursion du végétal. C'est l'orée d'un bois, la lisière d'une forêt où les parents peuvent s'abriter pour attendre que leurs enfants sortent de l'école.

Grâce au décollement, la réduction de l'emprise au sol libère des surfaces à l'arrière de la parcelle pour un jardin et un potager à vocation pédagogique. L'accès au parking des enseignants se fait par un porche sous la connexion entre l'école maternelle et le restaurant, afin d'éviter aux enfants de croiser des voitures.

Pour ce groupe scolaire enclavé dans un îlot d'habitations et desservi par une rue comme un couloir, la réalisation d'un tel projet répond à deux désirs des architectes : créer une situation urbaine paradoxale et délivrer un message aux enfants : tout est possible.

Réalisée en béton projeté, moulé et sculpté à la main par un artisan spécialisé, la façade reproduit à la perfection la roche avec ses fissures, ses arrêtes et ses arrondis dus à l'érosion, à la géotectonique, à la déformation des strates. Par souci d'intégration dans le paysage urbain, le ton argile se rapproche de la brique, mais la trame et le format des rochers imposent un changement d'échelle. On invoque ici les grands espaces, les canyons, les montagnes... L'aventure.

Sortie des sentiers battus, l'architecture hybride du bâtiment propose une transition entre l'environnement de briques rouges et un paysage de roches ocres. Ainsi modifiée, la vue d'ensemble de la rue laisse entrevoir de nouvelles perspectives.

C'est une invitation à l'ouverture, un stimulant pour l'imagination.

Bordée par un haut mur de briques rouges, l'allée des écoles présente une déclivité inhabituelle pour la région, qui place les deux bâtiments du groupe scolaire à des niveaux différents. Extension de chacune des écoles vers le centre, le bâtiment construit vient à la jonction : le rez-de-chaussée du restaurant prolonge l'école élémentaire, tandis que l'étage est au même niveau que l'école maternelle.

Grâce à sa position à cheval, le bâtiment bénéficie de plusieurs points d'entrée, qui permettent aux différents types d'usagers d'y accéder dans des conditions optimales. Depuis l'école maternelle, la connexion passe inaperçue : le couloir qui dessert les classes se prolonge pour donner directement dans la salle de restauration. Pour les plus petits, c'est la garantie d'un accès pratique et sûr : pas besoin de remettre les manteaux pour sortir, ni d'emprunter les escaliers.

Les élèves de l'école élémentaire entrent par le rez-de-chaussée depuis leur cour et les usagers extérieurs accèdent au bâtiment par la rue lorsqu'il est utilisé comme salle polyvalente, fonction inscrite au cahier des charges du projet.

Lieu de convivialité, le « Roc » est ainsi le point de convergence par excellence : réunion des deux écoles, centre du pâté de maisons, jonction du public et du privé, confluence du haut et du bas, de l'ici et de l'ailleurs.

A l'intérieur, la salle de restauration bénéficie du grand avantage de l'élévation : la luminosité. Les fenêtres à dimensions variables percent la façade sur le rythme d'une partition jusqu'ici inconnue, tandis que les pignons sont ouverts par de grandes baies vitrées. Des puits de lumière majestueux, tout en douceur, laissent entrer un maximum de lumière naturelle.

Le réfectoire baigné de lumière bénéficie également d'un confort acoustique idéal, grâce à un revêtement en plâtre lissé à la main, habituellement réservé aux salles de concert. La surface blanche, d'une grande élégance, met en valeur par sa sobriété les murs de roche artificielle, identiques à l'extérieur.

Pour gagner en fluidité, les jonctions entre les différentes surfaces sont gommées : ni joints, ni plinthes, ni raccords, qui sont autant d'éléments contre lesquels l'esprit vient buter. Les surfaces continues, les transitions douces, l'absence d'angles, visent à plus de liberté. Pas de limites à l'imagination.

« Je n'avais emporté ni cordes, ni tente, ni matériel, à l'exception de mes piolets. Je voulais être léger et rapide pour atteindre le sommet et en redescendre avant que le temps ne se gâte.
