Woodwing Villa is a private residence situated in Ekali, in the northern suburbs of Athens.

We believe that the private residence – through its architectural language, materials and furniture – should tell the story of the aspirations and character of those that inhabit it.

We were asked to design a flexible home that could respond and adapt accordingly to the changing seasons whilst maintaining constant visual connection with the surrounding forested landscape.

During the winter months the house functions as a warm, protective shell, enclosing the family within. As the days become longer and warmer the shell retracts, opening up to the garden and thereby expanding the living area to include the terrace and deck. The internal and external spaces merge, maximizing the benefits of both.

Natural materials, when processed appropriately, mature and improve over the years, recording their age through changes in their colour and texture. For instance, the traditional ‘Kourasanit’ render of powdered brick gradually acquires a special patina with time. Similarly, we chose Cedar and American Walnut for the timber-clad surfaces because of the subtle colour change that occurs as they age. Basaltina stone has been strategically placed both indoor and out to enhance the continuity of the ground floor living areas, and Cedar-clad interior walls share the distinctive color of the pine trees surrounding the house.

The carefully selected furniture also has an emphasis on hand crafted, natural materials. The pieces blend contemporary and classic design to create an interior style that is up to date yet timeless.
