ILLUMINAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA………….( ENGLISH VERSION BELOW )

ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

Everyone, almost without realizing it, reacts positively to daylight and fears the darkness of the night. Understanding this behaviour, these reactions, and perceptions etc is fundamental to being able to develop a good lighting design project both for indoor and outdoor environments.
Light helps us to interpret the volumes, the spaces and the colors, that surround us establishing thus our spatial coordinates. Our eyes see the light in an objective and didactic way. It is our mind that upon receiving the image from our eyes will process and interpret it in a subjective way. When approaching a lighting design project it is therefore fundamental to first address the psychological perception that the interpretation of the lighting will provoke.
“Decorative lighting” is simply that . It is a decoration that wants to be seen. On the contrary, “architectural lighting” is meant to aid perception, and possibly without being noticed. Therefore an architectural design project should begin with a careful visual analysis of the volumes and spaces under consideration. This, in order to arrive at the essential synthesis of those architectural signposts which, emphasized with accurately conceived lighting, will allow the observer to identify and perceive a faithful interpretation of what has been illuminated. It’s not necessary to illuminate a garden as if it were a football field or a cathedral as if it were a Las Vegas hotel, but it is necessary to identify the essential items which define the shapes and the empty spaces surrounding them and “emphasize” them, as naturally as can be with artificial light and when possible in a way that the lighting sources are not visible.
Lighting not only allows us to perceive shapes but colors as well. Therefore the architectural analysis of spaces and volumes must also be integrated, starting in the design phase with a careful choice of luminous fonts which will not falsify the original chromatic effect.
Another aspect of tantamount importance is necessarily to always design with an eye on the environment choosing eco-sustainable architectural lighting systems.
These concepts represent a summary of the design philosophy that MRLD has tried to remain faithful to during its 30 years of experience throughout the world.
