The extensive use of stone punctuated with small windows gives the old stone-clad Forgan Smith and its partner buildings the characteristic sense of institutional gravitas. The shift in a new age accessible education demands a shift in the tectonic in which buildings mirror contemporary university ideals of transparency and engagement. The challenge in extending these historic buildings is not to replicate but to find new ways to interpret their language while at the same time reflecting the University's more open pedagogy.
