Competition for a studio apartment renovation in Bologna, Italy.

The goal of this intervention is to give the studio a new, brighter and wider feeling. The space is re-arranged, by the dislocation of the bathroom walls. A new social area (living/dining room and kitchen) is placed between the entrance and the balcony doors, with built-in cabinets in both walls. The private area (bathroom and bedroom) is maximized by the reduction of the circulation space. All materials and furniture pieces have light colors and glossy finishing, thus enhancing the natural light that comes from both windows. The northeast wall is fully occupied by a built-in cabinet: a furniture piece, white with wooden details, with doors, shelves and drawers where you can keep everything, from your bike to your shoes, from your blankets to your storage boxes. This all-in-one cabinet also includes two specific features: a sofa that turns into a bed when you have guests, and a wall-mounted folding table with four seats (you can keep the chairs or stools inside the cabinet when not using them).

The social area of the studio is completed with two other elements: the kitchen and the tv wall. The kitchen cabinet, all in white, is a 240 x 60cm furniture piece where you can place all the equipments needed in a kitchen: a stove with extractor, an oven, an integrated fridge with freezer, a dishwasher and a sink. Still, there is also room for storage, in the interior shelves and drawers. The wall space between the lower and the upper cabinets is finished in blackboard, a material that is easy to clean and fun to use, giving you the possibility to extend your imagination (you can write on it your to do list, your agenda, your shopping list or the recipe you want to try but never remember). Near the entrance door, the existing column is disguised with a fake wall. The tv is placed there, at the same height of the kitchen’s blackboard, with a swivel bracket that allows you to adapt its position according to your viewing angle.

In the bedroom, the goal is to create a fresh but relaxing space. Thus, the presence of the furniture is reduced to the minimum, while the colors and textures take more importance. The wooden or metal furniture pieces (bed and bedside table, bench and clothes rack), simple and minimal looking, contrast with the richness of the fabrics, the softness of the pillows and armchair, the warmness of the rug, and the delicateness of the translucent curtains. The ambient is completed with a mirror that visually amplifies the space. This area is limited by a wall-to-floor sliding door, that gives you privacy when needed and allows the southern window light to enter throw the entire house when opened.
