The new building hosts the Universidad Popular, the headquarters of the PhotoEspaña International Centre in Alcobendas, as well as a media library and a citizen’s advice service of the City Council

Inaugurated with the name of the famous Castilian writer Miguel Delibes, the new building is erected on 6,000 square meters in the Avenida Pablo Iglesias of Alcobendas, one of the youngest areas of the city. This results from the express will of the developer to create an open and dynamic centre so as to generate a singular volumetry.

Rafael de La-Hoz proposes a building with three bodies that clearly differ from each other but are completely interrelated: a glazed cube, a massive volume of greater height and a horizontal perimeter crown, which rises from the ground and creates another space, a place of convergence and exchange.

The gap generated by the perimeter crown forms a large void, a spacious patio in which the other two volumes are inserted, leaving spaces filled with air and light between them. This results in two opposed patios in terms of size, proportions and orientation. The bigger one is a landscaped and sunny winter patio. The second is a vertical summer patio that provides shade in the summer.

The glazed central volume represents the core of the concept. It will host the multipurpose hall on the ground floor and the general vestibule of the building together with the exhibition and rest area on the first floor. Its centred position in the complex, between the two patios and tangential to the perimeter volume, turns it into an isolated body which, thanks to its crystalline materiality, looks like a huge night lantern from the outside.

The perimeter crown includes the lecture halls and workrooms of the University. The citizen’s advice service (SAC), the PhotoEspaña International Centre, the teacher’s room and the direction are included in the massive volume.

Each of these volumes have independent use and access from the street. They can thus be used at different times and in different ways, which allows for a completely flexible use of the complex.

Inaugurado con el nombre del célebre escritor castellano, Miguel Delibes, el nuevo edificio se levanta sobre una parcela de 6.000 metros cuadrados en la Avenida Pablo Iglesias de Alcobendas, una de las zonas más jóvenes de la ciudad. Es el resultado de la voluntad expresa del promotor de crear un centro abierto y dinámico hasta el punto de condicionar una volumetría singular.

Rafael de La-Hoz propone un edificio con tres cuerpos claramente diferenciados entre sí pero totalmente interrelacionados: un cubo acristalado, un volumen macizo de mayor altura y una corona perimetral de proporciones horizontales. Este última se eleva del suelo para crear otro espacio, una nueva plaza de confluencia e intercambio.

El hueco ocasionado por la corona perimetral configura un gran vacío, un amplio patio, en el que se insertan los otros dos volúmenes, dejando entre ellos espacios llenos de aire y de luz. Estos dos patios resultantes tienen caracteres contrapuestos debido a su tamaño, proporciones y orientación. El primero y de mayores dimensiones, de invierno, ajardinado y bien soleado. El segundo, con vocación vertical, de verano, en sombra.

El volumen central acristalado representa el corazón de la propuesta. En él se albergarán la sala polivalente en planta baja, y el vestíbulo general del edificio junto al área de exposiciones y el área de descanso en planta primera. Su posición centrada en el conjunto entre los dos patios y tangente al volumen perimetral, lo convierten en un cuerpo aislado que gracias a su materialidad cristalina se asemejaría a una enorme linterna nocturna desde el exterior.

En la corona perimetral se distribuyen las aulas y talleres de la Universidad y en el volumen macizo se ubica el Servicio de Atención al Cliente (SAC), la Escuela Internacional de Fotografía, las Salas de profesores y la Dirección.

Cada uno de estos volúmenes tiene un uso y un acceso independientes desde la calle lo que permite que se utilicen en diferentes horarios y de distintas maneras, permitiendo una utilización completamente flexible del complejo.
