Gisele Taranto, in collaboration with art curator Mara Fainziliber and lighting designer Maneco Quinderé, has created a Hotel Lounge,as part of "Casa Cor Rio 2012", the biggest and most important event of national architecture and decoration in Brazil.

This year the event took place in Rio de Janeiro at Flamengo district, in a building that was abandoned for many years. Inaugurated as a hotel, it became first a boarding school for a Nursery School and then had its last days of occupancy as lodging for college students. The architecture of the building, with its high ceilings, decoratedwalls, wood stairs and floors, was the inspiration for the conception of the space.

As a Hotel Lounge, an allusion to the first function of the building, Gisele proposed a room that kept the floor, walls and ceiling in its existing conditions and inserted new details as little “surgeries”. The missing parts of the wood floor, for example, were completed with corten steel. New skirting boards were “sewed” to the old ones with iron clips and its joints were filled with paper from old books. Gisele also created a “book wall”, using old books as bricks to complete part of a missing wall, making reference to the works of the German Hubertus Gojowczyk. The space has a lot of history and the use of books spread over the entire room was to create an atmosphere as the walls were “speaking”. The ceiling received a new structure made of corten steel and polycarbonate under the existing one, creating a semi-transparent layer that allows a partial view of old ceiling in its real deteriorated condition. A blue old painting, in one of the sides of the bookshelf, was preserved, being part of the decoration.

As a contrast to the “urban decay” atmosphere, the space received the best of the international and national design furniture, together with important pieces of art that were presented at ArtRio, an International Contemporary Art Fair that took place in September, in Rio de Janeiro. Adriana Eu, Laura Vinci, Grilo, Contente, Matthew Barney, Angelo Venosa and Graciela Sacco were some of the artists whose works were present in the room.

International brands, such as Poliform, Gervasoni and Vitra, together with Brazilian designers - Etel Carmona, Jader Almeida and Sérgio Rodrigues – had its furniture in the space, composed by five lounge areas. One of these areas also received a great antiquary table and bench. The lighting elements, by FontanaArte, Artemide, Olafur Eliasson and Fernando Prado, for example, complemented the composition. Gisele also put a personal touch, designing herself a big bookshelf, made of grey lacquered wood, creating a focal point  for the room, that you see as soon as you get into the space. All the lounge area is connected by a 26x30-foot over-dyed patchwork carpet, made especially for the space.
