Both Tijuana (Mexico) and San Diego (USA) – neighbouring border cities – have international airports. Paradoxically, Tijuana International Airport operates at 60% of its capacity, whilst San Diego Airport is saturated and lacks future growth options.
The easiest and most economical way to solve this unbalance is obvious: to facilitate and make trips more agreeable through TIJ airport for passengers who begin or end their journey in the USA. However, for years, border and migration policies prevented this solution from becoming effective.
Finally, in 2010 both countries reached an agreement to build, maintain and operate a new border crossing, through a bridge that would connect directly to Tijuana Airport. This bridge, which will be named Puerta de las Californias will be exclusively used by passengers.
Commissioned by the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (GAP), Idom has been in charge of designing the integration of this bridge in the international area of the Tijuana Airport.
The architectonic project unfolds as a linear element, articulated in two pieces, linked together by the façade. One of the pieces blends in with the existing terminal, entirely changing the international arrivals lounge, whilst the other connects with a terminal building in the USA through a bridge designed over the border and a federal road.
