Project b70 is located in the inner city Calgary community of Altadore. This dwelling was created in 2013 with the concept of combining modern and rustic elements in a way that represents Calgary as a contemporary prairie city. The use of brick on the home’s exterior anchors the building in the historic neighborhood, allowing for the use of a modern shape and color. The traditional shape of a house is challenged, as perfect symmetry and calculated overhangs are erased and replaced by uneven cantilevers, perfectly aligned joints, and flush surfaces. The high contrast between blacks and whites constructs crisp lines and well-defined surfaces. The idea of merging matured iconic Western elements and current designs are reflected in the material choices. Reclaimed woodbeams, brick on the exterior as well as the interior, and custom barn doors add a prairie-like design aesthetic to the home. This unique blend of ruralmodern themes presents a cohesive and striking embodiment of the essence of this city.
