Woda Sodowa Cafe | Sojka&Wojciechowski

Woda Sodowa café is located in a historic building from the early twentieth century in the heart of Wrocław. Its name literally means ‘sparkling water’. In Poland, sparkling water is inseparably associated with street carts called Saturators (carbonators), which in the 70s and 80s could be found on the streets of major cities in the country. Unfortunately, as a result of stricter regulations prescribed by sanitary authorities in the early 90s, Saturators were withdrawn from use. To this day, however, they bring up good memories to many.

For us, Saturators were an inspiration for the main tables’ design at Woda Sodowa. One of the cart’s characteristic elements was a colorful canopy that protected a sales person from the sun.The tables will be used outside during summertime, so the canopies are not only a decorative element but a practical solution as well. For that, we used summery yellow and white fabric, which is repeatedly applied throughout the interior as well. In addition, we designed yellow lamps that are shaped as drinking straws. Walls behind the bar were finished with plywood of various thickness and color; we decided it was a good spot for placing the menu.

Making a visual reference to the location of Woda Sodowa was important to us. We accomplished that by shaping the pattern on the main floor of the café exactly the same as the one on the main patio of the building.
