Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute | HOK
San Diego / United States / 2015
This seven-story tower is the first step of a strategy to replace the existing hospital with what will be the most comprehensive medical campus in the San Diego region.
Close collaboration with Scripps administrators and clinicians has helped the team design a facility that incorporates advanced thinking in patient-centered care while supporting the recognized programs of progressive cardiovascular care of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital.
The building will include 108 medical/surgical beds, 60 intensive care unit beds, 10 interventional/operating rooms, a new central energy plant, a sterile processing department and space for a future expansion of the emergency department.
Respectful of the traditional design on the existing campus, the team used four materials — brick, glass, steel and metal panels — to create direct, readable forms.
When it opens in 2015, the institute will house the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cardiovascular diseases. It also will serve as a center for medical research, clinical trials and graduate medical education.
