One of the main characteristics of nature is to nourish, engage and stimulate the soul. The Islands, Sea and Food Cluster concept is based on this characteristic that is typical in nature, “feeding the soul” through its sounds, colors and aromas. The sound of rushing water, the crunch of gravel and the knocking of wood, gives the visitor a sense of the harmony typically found within the lands of this Cluster.

The Cluster structure
The Countries exhibiting inside this cluster are grouped together under a large bamboo canopy that stands high above, connecting the two pavilions. This creates a unique environment of colors and atmosphere. The walls of this Cluster display verses from well-known writers, such as Homer, Conrad, Columbus, Darwin and Melville, whose writings evoke thoughts of journeys made at sea and to remote desert islands.
As the visitors head towards the exit of this Cluster, they have the opportunity to enter an area that displays underwater images, giving the impression of actually being under water. This is an opportunity to experience the magical and charming yet fragile biodiversity that is characteristic of these islands and the seas that surround them.

Protect the ecosystems
The Pacific islands, the Western Indian Ocean and the islands of the Caribbean region are all small, diverse and a long distance from each other, resulting in them all having their own culture, economy and levels of development. Even though these islands are all unique, they share the same global challenges that every other country has to face. The rise in coastal flooding, the salt levels within the soil and the change in levels of rainfall can lead to contamination and greatly reduce production in areas of cultivation. These issues also have a profound effect on the islands’ crafts and fishing activities, which puts the feeding security of these areas at greater risk.
