Follow the spice route through continents, lands and seas. Smell their aromas. Use them as culinary ingredients, medicinal remedies or cosmetics. All this is possible for visitors as they step into the World of Spices Cluster that offers a truly sensorial experience.

The experience becomes a true journey: according to some historians, it was indeed the profitable spice trade that drove innovation in navigation, the exploration of the earth and the discovery of new geographical areas.

The Cluster Structure
The exhibition area shows geographical maps that have guided explorers traveling the world in their discovery of spices, suggesting a journey through cultures which begins with a sequence of “sensorial areas” that include tastings, installations and events.

All around the world there are many areas where the cultivation, preparation and use of spices is carried out regularly, be it in medicine or for socio-cultural rituals that sometimes border on magic. The exhibition journey shows visitors all the spices that originate from the countries of this Cluster.

On the Spice Route
Spices evoke colors, aromas and the allure of exotic lands, but also an image of ancient and intriguing maps connecting far-flung parts of the world. Spices and aromatic herbs have always inspired long journeys, and emperors, kings, aristocrats and merchants have made them into the most luxurious product of the ancient commercial routes.

Over the last ten years, the annual spice production has grown by 4.3% whilst their trade has enjoyed an average increase of 5.8% per year. Thanks to increasingly demanding consumers, a trend of healthier eating, an increase in salaries and globalization, we can expect to see yet more growth in the spice trade in the future.

COUNTRIES IN THE CLUSTER
Afghanistan
Brunei Darussalam
United Republic of Tanzania
