The new Conservatory of Music 'Darius Milhaud' in Aix en Provence is designed by the architects Kengo Kuma and Associates, winner of the public competition.
The project is located in a cultural area of the city and next to the Pavillon Noir by Rudy Ricciotti.
It consists of 2 wings placed at 90 °, the Mozart wing which contains the auditorium has a metal frame structure, while the Juvenal wing is built in concrete.

The facades are dressed with large panels of anodized aluminum arranged in stripes: verticals side street, they are horizontals on the courtyard side.
The corners of the building are sliced frankly by inclined planes fully glazed.

The external metallic skin are slightly tilted outward, as raised by the plan of the façade. This effect is inspired by the Japanese art of origami.
Each panel is in reality a three dimensional box composed of 4 mm thickness aluminium sheets fixed by an invisible fixing system.
Each panel needs a 3D modelisation. It was pre-assembled at the factory and then placed on site on the support rails as for a tradituinal cassette cladding.
The design of the external skin has necessitated an exploration on welding systems without visible impact on the side panels, particularly tricky to get with anodized panels. The fixing screws are welded on the rear of each panel by a welding system knew as 'capacitor discharge system'.
