Beats by Dre Headquarters | Bestor Architecture
2015 Institute Honor Awards for Interior Architecture Culver City / United States / 2014
The design challenge of this project, located in Culver City, California, was to develop a scheme that could accommodate working environments for three CEOs, four executives, and 650 employees across more than a dozen departments, ranging from software (music) to hardware (electronics). Bestor Architecture, known for its use of color and pattern, eschewed the all-white aesthetic favored by Apple and other Silicon Valley firms to create an interior saturated in deep blue and red paint, custom-designed wallpapers, and warm woods. The goal was to design a light-filled, comfortable, cutting-edge environment.
The adaptive use of two existing industrial buildings resulted in 105,000 square feet of space on two floors. In the main building, the existing second floor was cut away to create a long, two-story lobby that cuts across the building’s short axis. The entire staff can gather in this skylit space for the CEO’s all-staff meetings and other events. Two light-filled courtyards—one dedicated to marketing/sales and the other to operations—on either side of the lobby complete the organizing elements of the office layout. Light monitors on the roof bring in natural light.
All of the work spaces—from cooperative work zones to white boards and the café—are designed to encourage interaction and contact across departments. The company’s connection to the history, landscape, and culture of Southern California is underscored by a series of photo murals commissioned from Dutch photographer Iwan Baan. Conference and break-out rooms feature his aerial images of Los Angeles, including abstractions of freeway exchanges and the oil pump jacks of Baldwin Hills.
