The unique domaine La Cabotte is located on a hillside surrounded by vineyards and woods looking at the Mont Ventoux appearing on the horizon. The domaine is strongly involved in the respectfull terroir farming and wishes to reunite in one same place three functions: a place to welcome visitors with a space dedicated to wine-tasting, an office and washrooms for the wine growers.

The office decided to take into account two elements to best respond to the above programme : the presence of the landscape and an evocation of the local vernacular architecture.

The project is based on a star-plan with three branches, each one corresponding to one of the functions listed above. The structure and the wooden envelope include the furniture elements for the wine-tasting space and the office. This gives a real thickness to the walls and recalls the original constructive principles of the “cabotte”.

The unusual plan allows for a central area or core from which the office suggested, thanks to wide openings, a double orientation onto the landscape. These openings frame and dramatize the important elements of the geography (vineyards, Mont Ventoux etc.).

The pleasure of the palet is thus associated to the surrounding landscape. From the outside, the volume has a traditional double-sloping roof for each branch of the building. There is a contemporary touch in the play between the line of the roof and the line of the wall which don’t always overlap in the same place.

There is a palpable tension between the volumes and the landscape. The « cabotte » is simply resting there amongst the vines….The addition of “feet” to two of the three volumes corrects the slight slope of the ground

Le domaine La Cabotte s’implante à flanc de colline ceinturé de vignes et de bois dans un écrin naturel préservé regardant le Mont Ventoux émerger à l’horizon. Le domaine fortement impliqué dans la culture respectueuse du terroir souhaite réunir en un même lieu trois fonctions: l’accueil du public avec un espace de dégustation, un bureau et des sanitaires destinés aux vignerons.

À cet énoncé des nécessités du projet l’agence a rajouté deux éléments, à savoir, la présence du paysage et une évocation de l’histoire locale du bâti.

Le projet est caractérisé par un plan en étoile à trois branches réunissant, pour chacune d’elle, les fonctions citées ci-dessus.

La structure et l’enveloppe en bois intègrent les éléments de mobilier qui servent à la dégustation (rangement, comptoir). Ce travail permet de donner une véritable épaisseur aux murs greffés de fonction, allusion aux principes originels de La Cabotte.

La singularité du plan fait émerger un centre à partir duquel nous proposons, par le biais de grandes ouvertures, une double orientation sur le paysage. Les ouvertures cadrent et mettent en scène les éléments marquants de la géographie (vignobles, mont Ventoux, etc).

Le plaisir du palais est associé à la géographie du terroir.

De l’extérieur, le volume reprend une toiture traditionnelle à double pente pour chacune des branches. Deux des branches proposent des lignes de faîtage fuyantes, laissant tantôt croître la toiture au détriment du mur, tantôt croître le mur au détriment de la toiture.

Il en ressort une tension palpable des volumes en écho au paysage.
La Cabotte est simplement posée au sol au milieu des vignes, l’ajout de pieds à deux des trois branches permet de corriger la légère déclivité du sol.
