Progetto di recupero del teatro "CASSINO DA URCA" | Studio SERAFINI

Il progetto prevede il recupero di parte del “Cassino da Urca” a Rio De Janeiro.

L’area dove sorge il Cassino da Urca è situata nella penisola che si estende verso est all'ingresso della baia di Guanabara. Là, ai piedi del Pan di Zucchero e del Morro da Urca, verso la baia di Botafogo, sorge il quartiere residenziale “Urca”, uno dei più ricchi ed esclusivi del Brasile.

In prossimità del Morro da Urca, rivolta verso la baia e ben protetta dalla violenza dell’oceano, si trova una spiaggia frequentata soprattutto dai residenti, la piccola Praia da Urca, dove sorge il vecchio casinò realizzato nel 1933 al posto del precedente Hotel Balneário che poi, con la messa al bando del gioco d'azzardo in Brasile nel 1941, diventò, negli anni cinquanta, la sede della prima rete televisiva della città.

Subito alle spalle del Cassino sorge il Morro da Urca (230 m s.l.m.) e leggermente spostato alla sua sinistra c’è il Pan di Zucchero (398 m s.l.m.), uno dei rilievi monolitici più celebri della capitale brasiliana.

Dopo avere ospitato gli studi della rete televisiva sono seguiti anni di abbandono che hanno visto il progressivo degrado dell’edificio.

Il Cassino da Urca, unitario nel suo complesso, si caratterizza per il fatto di essere scisso in due edifici distinti e separati da una strada ad essi frapposta. Questa strada in quel punto, stretta tra la spiaggia e le prime propaggini assai ripide del Morro da Urca, è costretta ad un tracciato che si incastra al Cassino, con il quale, per un breve tratto, entra anche a farne parte là dove la strada è coperta dalla terrazza continua dell’edificio che riunifica le due parti distinte.

Da questa situazione morfologica dell’area ne deriva, come detto, un complesso edificio  scisso in due corpi distinti: il primo dolcemente posizionato a ridosso della spiaggia mentre il secondo è schiacciato contro le pendici della montagna. Il famoso teatro il cui palcoscenico ha visto le esibizioni della famosa cantante Carmen Miranda è situato in questa seconda parte.

L’istituto Europeo di Design IED, prestigioso istituto italiano con sedi in tutto il mondo, si è occupato del recupero dell’ala rivolta verso il mare per farne la sua sede a Rio  mentre per l’altra metà l’ICRANET, International Center for Relativistic Astrophisics, ha studiato un progetto, che qui è presentato, per il recupero architettonico-strutturale del teatro e contemporaneamente organizzare spazi per ospitare i suoi laboratori di ricerca.

The project provides for the recovery of part of the "Cassino da Urca" in Rio De Janeiro.

The area where there is the Cassino da Urca is located in the peninsula that extends eastward at the entrance to Guanabara Bay. There, at the foot of Sugarloaf and the Morro da Urca, to the bay of Botafogo, is the residential district "Urca", one of the richest and exclusive of Brazil.

Near the Morro da Urca, facing the bay and well protected from the violence of the ocean, there is a beach frequented mainly by residents, the small Praia da Urca, where stands the old casino built in 1933 instead of the previous Hotel Balneario that then, with the banning of gambling in Brazil in 1941, became, in the fifties, the seat of the first television network in the city.

Immediately behind the Cassino is the Morro da Urca (230 meters) and shifted slightly to the left there is the Sugar Loaf (398 m above sea level), one of the most famous monolithic reliefs of the Brazilian capital.

After hosting the studies of the television network followed years of neglect that have seen the progressive deterioration of the building.

The Cassino da Urca, the unit as a whole, is characterized by the fact of being split into two separate buildings and separated by a road interposed to them. This road at that point, sandwiched between the beach and the very steep foothills of the Morro da Urca, is forced to a path that fits the Cassino, with which, for a short distance, also enters to be part of it where the road is covered from the terrace of the building continues to collate the two distinct parts.

From this morphological situation of the resulting benefit, as mentioned, a complex building split into two distinct parts: the first gently placed behind the beach while the latter is pressed against the slopes of the mountain. The famous theater whose stage has seen performances of the famous singer Carmen Miranda is located in this second part.

The European Institute of Design IED, the prestigious Italian institution with offices around the world, has worked on the recovery of the wing facing the sea to make it his home in Rio while for the other half the ICRANET, International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics, has studied a project, which is presented here, for the recovery of architectural and structural theater and simultaneously organize space to house its research laboratories.
