Competition for a apartment remodel in New Jersey, USA - Honorable Mention.

- OPEN SPACE, FUNCTIONAL SPACE:
the house is divided into different zones (living, working, sleeping, dining, bathing) without using many solid barriers, giving a sense of fluidness to the apartment. The privacy of each space is guaranteed through sliding wood panels, which you can open or close as you need. The placement of the guest bedroom next to the living room allows you to enlarge or diminish both spaces as you want; the use of a murphy bed in this compartment (instead of using it in the teenager´s bedroom) contributes to the versatility of this space. In every compartment, built-in closets, shelves and window benches create a large amount of storage space, keeping the house functional and organized.

- KEEP THE BEST OF THE EXISTING SPACE:
the warm light that comes from the wide windows illuminates all bedrooms and living spaces. The beauty of the Y-shaped pillars is preserved and used as basis of the house’s aesthetics.

- AFFORDABILITY, CHANGEABILITY:
the bathrooms were kept in the same place, with the new kitchen near one of them, to reduce the costs of this remodel. If you want to separate the two apartments again, the simple introduction of a dividing wall between them will allow you to have once more an independent studio and a two bedroom apartment.
