Program and context

The site is located in the district 6 in the city of Zurich, originally a residential neighborhood with large gardens.
The project was an apartment building with three rental apartments, one apartment on the ground floor with a garden, an apartment in the middle, due to the slope with a garden too and on the top floor a duplex penthouse. The wanted the living rooms to be outside rooms with maximum views and optimal exposure to receive the light. This while keeping the upmost privacy in the dense Context of the city.
Therefore the goal was to achieve spaces you normally only get in private houses, but not in an apartment building.
Another topic we follow here, is to leave the context of the house in the architectural connotation. Not the facade, as separation between inside and outside, so the tempered space, generates volumetric face of the building, but a figure independent from the heated space, generates presence and power.

Architectural concept

In this project the architectural concept eventually led to the figure of a Stone H.
The letter H has under the bridge a covered outdoor space and over the bridge a patio. We put yet another stone, the attic, which makes this Patio turn into an outer space above the H. Thus, the living spaces are considered as outdoor rooms, because they are outside the mass of the H.
The H is a well-known letter on which we put a stone on top of it. This produces less a volume of a house than rather two stone elements, two masses almost without glass. In cold weather, the outdoor spaces which are the living rooms can be closed with large sliding windows, so that they become inside spaces.
This figure is inhabited below and above it, a shaped mass which develops an original force and almost a ruin equal, evades the dictates of civilized 'conformist concept of home, from exterior and interior. It is the desire for freedom and renewal, that let us bring well-proven elements of architecture in new contexts. It creates powerful habitats, without additional cost.

Mass and light, program free and Periphery

The stone H has a two-shell concrete structure. The outer shell of the H is casted with OSB, which generates a rough, almost organ surface. On the inside of the H the surface is smooth concrete.
The different casted surfaces enhance the feeling that the living room is actually an outer space.
 In concrete recessed light fixtures provide indirect lights, enhancing the impression of mass communication in space, components become alive with light.
In our understanding of program free architecture, all programs are hidden in the periphery and can be deployed into the room as needed. The Leitmotiv of the mass is articulated by the sculpture of the H and even the interior walls, as they appear 0.5 m thick. These massive stone elements generate a strong force and attraction.
On the contrary normal dividing walls are between 15-20 cm only suggest separation.
We formed these masses into a communicating topography, with programs like kitchen and concrete benches in the periphery to interact with the space.

Construction and cost effectiveness

Contrary to popular belief, a twin-shell concrete structure is economically not the most expensive system and therefore not luxury. We have calculated that it amounts to the same cost as a standard facade. This is because the shell once completed by the builder, is finished and no additional works are needed.

Nicht die Fassade, als Trennung von Innen und Aussen, also der temperierte Raum, erzeugt die volumetrische Erscheinung der Baute, sondern eine vom beheizten Raum unabhängige Figur erzeugt Präsenz und Kraft. Man lebt auf, unter und zwischen kräftigen massigen Elementen, einem H aus Stein.

Programm / Ausgangslage

Das Grundstück liegt im Kreis 6 in der Stadt Zürich, ursprünglich ein Villenquartier mit großen Gärten.
Geplant war ein Mehrfamilienhaus mit drei Mietwohnungen, eine Wohnung im Erdgeschoss mit Garten, eine mittlere Wohnung, aufgrund der Hanglage mit Garten im Obergeschoss und ein Maisonette Dachwohnung. Unsere Wohnräume sind Aussenräume mit maximaler Aussicht und optimaler Belichtung bei größtmöglicher Privatsphäre, in Mietwohnungen im dichten Kontext der Stadt.

Architektonisches Konzept
In diesem Projekt führte das architektonische Konzept schließlich zur Figur eines H aus Stein, Stone H.

Das H hat unter der ‚Brücke‘ im Buchstaben einen überdeckten Aussenraum und über der Brücke einen Patio. Über das H legen wir noch einen weiteren Stein, das Dachgeschoss, das diesen Patio wiederum zum überdeckten Aussenraum macht. So werden die Wohnräume als Aussenräume, da ausserhalb der Masse, außerhalb des H’s, wahrgenommen. Das H wird als uns bekannte Figur ‚gelesen‘, mit einem Stein oben drauf. Dies erzeugt weiniger ein Volumen eines Hauses, als viel mehr zwei steinige Elemente, zwei Massen fast ohne Glas. Bei Kälte werden die Aussenräume, die Wohnräume sind, mit grossen Schiebefenstern geschlossen, sodass daraus Innenräume werden.
Diese H Figur wird bewohnt, darunter und darüber, eine geformte Masse die eine ursprüngliche Kraft entfaltet und schon fast einer Ruine gleich, sich dem Diktat des ‚zivilisierten‘ gleichgeschalteten Begriff von Haus, von Aussen und Innen entzieht. Es ist der Drang nach Freiheit und Erneuerung, die uns bekannte und bewährte Elemente der Architektur in neue Zusammenhänge bringen lässt. Es entstehen kraftvolle Lebensräume, ohne wirtschaftlichen Mehraufwand.

Masse und Licht, programmfrei und Peripherie
Das Stone H hat eine zweischalige Sichtbetonkonstruktion. Die ‚äußere´ Schale des H’s ist mit OSB Platten geschalt, was eine raue, fast organische Oberfläche generiert. Die inneren Betonoberflächen des H's sind glatt. Die unterschiedlich geschalten Oberflächen verstärken das Gefühl, dass der Wohnraum eigentlich ein Aussenraum ist.

Im H Inneren ist die Oberfläche glatt. Im Beton eingelassene Beleuchtungskörper, die über indirektes Licht erzeugen, verstärken den Eindruck der kommunikativen Masse im Raum,

Bauteile werden mit Licht belebt.
In unserer Tradition der ‚programmfreien Architektur‘ sind alle Programme in der Peripherie versteckt und können je nach Bedarf in den Raum hinein entfaltet werden. Das Thema der Masse ist nicht nur durch die Figur des H’s artikuliert, die Innenwände erscheinen 0.5m dick. Entgegen normalen Trennwänden von 15 – 20 cm, die als Raumtrennung erscheinen, erzeugen diese massiven steinigen Elemente eine starke Kraft und Anziehung.
Diese Massen formten wir zu eigentlichen Topographien mit Programm und Kommunikation, Küchen aus Beton, Bänke in der Peripherie um mit dem Raum zu kommunizieren.

Konstruktion und Wirtschaftlichkeit
Entgegen der verbreiteten Meinung eine zweischalige Sichtbeton Konstruktion sei wirtschaftlich das aufwendigste System und quasi Luxus, haben wir errechnet, dass es auf die gleichen Kosten hinausläuft wie eine Kompaktfassade. Dies weil nach der Baumeister den Rohbau vollendet hat, mehrere Arbeitsgattungen wegfallen; keine Spenglerbleche, keine Fassadenputze und keine Malerarbeiten.
