Hawkins\Brown’s latest London project has topped out on Wenlock Road as London’s tallest sustainable hybrid timber structure.
The main structure of the 10 storey Bayan Wharf development has been made using solid cross-laminated timber, manufactured sustainably off-site. Timber and steel specialist B+K Structures developed the innovative CLT hybrid structural strategy to achieve the unique 10 storey building design, ensuring the maximum efficiency and sustainability in the structure using minimal steel elements to strengthen the frame.
The mixed-use scheme comprises B1 office and residential space over 6,750sq m and twists a traditional cruciform plan in two-storey blocks to provide maximum light and views to the 50 apartments. The unique layout of the building creates east and west facing terraces as well as a generous open terrace at first floor providing green space for residents.
A dark brick screen will complete the Wenlock Road elevation and slatted red cedar cladding will cover the timber structure when the building completes in 2015.
