Cousins & Cousins’ design updates the rundown building to modern living standards and brings light into a dark Victorian house.

The new extension was created following the demolition and rebuilding of the rear of the building. The structurally glazed frameless glass roof mimics the pitch of the existing roofline, and with the glazing provides a stimulating and innovative counterpoint to the materiality of the existing building.

A structurally bonded glass triangle hangs flush with the main back elevation closing-off the glass roof against the existing building and flooding the center of the house with light– a space that usually suffers from lack of light in most conversions.

The environmental performance of the project has been considered with the aim to reduce thermal bridging and heat loss. This has been achieved with the introduction of high performance glazed units to the extension; thermal insulation that exceeds building regulation requirements; triple glazed sash windows; a solar thermal hot water storage system, and low temperature underfloor heating.

Where possible, we have also used reclaimed materials from the site, including stock bricks and slate tiles resulting in a thermally efficient and sustainable project.

The new intervention celebrates the old Victorian house and preserves its origins, whilst creating a modern innovative space suitable for a growing family.
