This project consisted of two separate buildings; the refurbishment of the Leeds Civic theatre, a Grade II* listed building completed in 1868, to form the new Leeds City Museum; and the Resource Centre, a new storage facility for Leeds City Museums.

The new Leeds City Museum is housed in the former Mechanics' Institute built by Cuthbert Brodrick, in Millennium Square, which was redeveloped to a design by Austin-Smith:Lord architects and Buro Happold engineers. Gallery and exhibit design was provided by Redman Design.
