HLM Interiors has completed the interior design for a new Workspace property ‘ScreenWorks’ on Highbury Grove in North London. Workspace provides business premises for new and growing companies across London.

The property incorporates a reception area on the ground floor and ‘Club Workspace’ area for businesses in their infancy, which has 24-hour access and offers a drop-in space for individuals as an initial step for their business. Within this space there is a virtual receptionist, post box, connection to the building’s Wi-Fi and communal printing facilities.

The concept behind the reception design is based around the industrial heritage of the building; it was formerly used to manufacture some of the earliest radios and televisions. It integrates this history with a calming atmosphere; created by incorporating Scandinavian organic soft shaped furniture in natural tones, against the subtle and understated concrete grey flooring. The services within this space are also exposed; further enhancing the industrialisation of the space. The ‘ScreenWorks’ café sits within the open plan space and is run as an independent business serving food and drinks.

The ground floor also has four meeting rooms that can be hired, all with an original theme – a first for Workspace – and a statement piece in each: The Games Room, a 20s Room, Misled, and a 50s Room.

The Games Room has an 80s game show theme and incorporates a large speedboat graphic, an LED ‘Come on Down’ sign imported from America, and statement gold 'Mantis' chairs by SCP.
The 20’s Room has geometric wallpaper by Cole & Son, 1920s film posters of King Kong and Metropolis, and a George Nelson Asterix wall clock.
The Misled Room has a concrete-look to its walls and boasts a unique meeting room table with a bespoke worktop, designed by illustrator 'Miss Led'; the worktop offers a touch of femininity and warmth.
The 50’s Room is inspired by the heritage of the building and includes a selection of seven retro televisions from the era. To fit in with the theme there is also a retro flip wall clock, and a 1950s walnut frame cabinet.

As well as the interior design, HLM was also responsible for styling each area and including the four meeting rooms; handpicking all accessories down to the last detail; including artwork, glassware and historical objects.

On the lower ground floor, and the four floors above the ground floor, there are a total of 104 offices ranging from 207sq ft to 2,386 sq ft (20 sq m to 96 sq m). These rooms have been designed to be a blank canvas – once rented, they can be brought to life by their occupants.

Mathew Freeman, Senior Interior Designer at HLM, said: “From concept through to completion, the design-led approach to this project has focused on the importance of combining the building’s heritage with effective and comfortable workspace. This is especially evident in the interior design of the three main areas: the ‘themed rooms’, the Club Workspace, and the ScreenWorks café.”

As well as undertaking the interior design for this development, HLM was also the architect responsible for the design of the building, which is part of a three-building development with Taylor Wimpey Central London. The other two buildings are residential.
