(prima fase)
Il team , in una prima fase, si è dedicato allo studio dei riverfont mediante una precisa ricerca di progetti (casi studio), grazie ai quali è stato possibile comprendere le metodologie e gli approcci progettuali, di numerosi progettisti, su scala mondiale.
Grazie a questa prima fase di ricerca sono stati individuati due tipologie di parametri, poi utilizzati nella progettazione come punti di riferimento.

(seconda fase)
Attraverso un’analisi approfondita del territorio e dell’asse fluviale è stato possibile individuare tre tipologie di paesaggio:
- paesaggio naturale
- paesaggio agrario
- paesaggio antropico
(Importante è specificare che le tre diverse tipologie di paesaggio coesistono in una stessa porzione di territorio, nonostante siano disconnesse tra loro e inoltre rispondono alle esigenze antropiche/economiche del territorio).
Fondamentale è stato lo studio del rischio idraulico (cardine del progetto) e dell’individuazione delle aree sottoposte a differenti categorie di rischio.
L’individuazione delle debolezze-minacce e delle forze-opportunità hanno consentito la definizione delle strategie di intervento:
- mitigazione del rischio idraulico (studio delle esondazioni e individuazione delle molteplici strategie di mitigazione del corso fluviale);
- percezione e riscoperta del paesaggio fluviale;
- realizzazione del masterplan.

(terza fase)
Il gruppo di lavoro con la messa a punto del masterplan ha cercato di risolvere le problematiche territoriali attraverso l’esaltazione delle peculiarità dei tre tipi di paesaggio (individuati nelle analisi),
unificandoli in una grande GreenWay.
Il masterplan così individua tre livelli di intervento:
Sicurezza idraulica: ampliamento delle fasce golenali; realizzazione di bacini di raccolta; manutenzione e pulizia del letto del fiume;
Corridoio ecologico: rinforzo e ridistribuzione della vegetazione lungo le sponde del fiume; favorire il ripristino ecologico mediante un sistema di wetlands;
Infrastrutture e servizi: miglioramento, ampliamento e connessione dei servizi ciclo-pedonali esistenti (Riserva Valle dell’Aniene) e progettazione di una maglia di infrastrutture ciclo-pedonali extraurbane che si estendono lungo il riverfront, favorendo così la riscoperta dei Luoghi del Fiume Aniene; incremento e miglioramento dei servizi e delle attività esistenti.

I tre esempi di intervento, nello specifico, si focalizzano sulla messa in sicurezza delle sponde del fiume attraverso l’impiego delle tecniche costruttive di ingegneria naturalistica:

(phase one)
At first, the team approached the riverfront design by studying several projects, of other designers, that were involved in this subject.
During the study of these projects, the team identified two types of resolutions that helped the project stage. 

(phase two)
The team seeked to understand the existing data of the riverfront by a thorough research analysis of the surrouding territory
and of the fluvial axis of the river.
By the research analysis it was made possible to identify three types of landscape present in the riverfront section of the project:
- natural landscape
- agricultural landscape
- urban landscape
(It is important to specify that the three different types of landscapes are in the same part of the territory, even though they may look disconnected and furthermore they represent the anthrop and economic needs of the territory.)
Particular attention was given to the Hydraulic risk of the river and to the nearby flood areas, which are the major concern of the thesis.
Due to the SWOT analysis (Strength-Weakness-Opportunities-Threats) it was possible to establish the strategy of the project:
- Improving the Hydraulic risk (study of floods in order to avoid them)
- Rediscovering the fluvial landscape
- Realization of the masterplan

(phase three)
The working group developing the masterplan tried to resolve territorial issues of the three landscape types (identified in the analysis) by unifying them in a greenway.
Due to the Masterplan it was possible to identify three levels of operations :
    - Hydraulic safety: enlargement of the riverbanks; achievement of catchment areas; maintenance and cleaning   of the river bed;
    - Ecological corridor: reinforcement and redistribution of vegetation along the banks of the river, promote the ecological restoration through a system of wetlands;
    - Facilities and services: improvement of the existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities (Aniene Valley Reserve) and design suburban cycle and pedestrian infrastructures which extend along the riverfront, thus promoting the rediscovery of the Aniene fluvial area; increasing and improving of existing services and activities.

(phase four)
Examples of project details, that may be applied on various sections of the river, which enhance the different design features:

The three examples are mainly focused on the safety of the riverbanks by bioengineering techniques.
