Kare will be opening the doors to Kare Kraftwerk, its unique brand flagship store, for our friends and regular customers.

Kare Kraftwerk will be a place full of imagination, creating space for the future of furnishing. It won't be just another furniture store in Munich. According to the management of Kare, the furniture company which has been established in Munich for 33 years now, the way Kraftwerk is operated will be an open-ended experiment. Kare will soon be opening the doors of its Kraftwerk at 25 Drygalski Allee 25 in Obersendling, with a clear commitment to remain true to its slogan ‘Shameless since 1981’. Two months before the official opening the company will be revealing the converted rooms of the industrial monument to the public.

The entire world of Kare products – furniture, lamps, pictures, mirrors, decorative objects and gifts – will soon come together in Obersendling . Kraftwerk will be the showroom for the company’s international retail operations and a so-called ‘destination shop’ for the residents of Munich.
This means that Drygalski-Allee is the ideal destination for those who wish to look for furnishing ideas well away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and collect innovative ideas during a visit to the building, followed by creative regional cuisine on the roof terrace with a magical view of the Alps.

A meeting point and space for experiments
In addition Kare founders and managing partners Jürgen Reiter and Peter Schönhofen are planning cultural events such as photographic exhibitions. For the official opening Sascha Kletzsch will be presenting his artistic photographic observations of Kraftwerk before and during the conversion process. At seminars and workshops furnishing professionals and expert decorators will be presenting individual solutions, from furnishing with feng shui to decorating in the retro style. On the restaurant floor there will be baking and cookery courses, while forums on the future of furnishing are projected with trend researchers and city planners. The spacious courtyard in front of the main entrance is ideal for a Christmas market, for example, or special exhibitions on the subject of gardens and balconies.

Family friendly
In addition to fans of furniture design the Kare team also expressly welcomes families. A cuddly, seven-metre tall bunny invites children to play in a kids’ corner, while staff will help the little ones to solve a series of puzzles as they take a tour of discovery of the building.

The first furniture will be arriving in June
By the end of July the Kare decorators will have completed designing the 10,000 m² showrooms. Special areas focusing on beds, tables and chairs will alternate with individual furnishing displays showing typical furnishing solutions in compact form and in a wide variety of styles. A studio for upholstered furniture will be located in the ‘cathedral’ halls, which still feature the original walls and grids through which enormous volumes of cold outside air were sucked into the original power station for cooling purposes. In addition visitors can stroll through the ‘sandwich rooms’, each of which represents a small apartment in itself. The walls of these rooms are also original and are interrupted by circular openings which contain the former huge fans. The sandwich rooms arose as a result of the statics requirements of the building, while fans provide transverse ventilation.

An emblem in Obersendling
The conversion work has not yet been finally completed, but the facade with its expanded-metal panels is already beginning to emit a copper glow. Large show windows open up the building to the neighbourhood and allow the light to flood the rooms.

Chicks in the falcons’ nest on the Kraftwerk chimney
The evidence is there: the pair of peregrine falcons which have been nesting on the old power station chimney have had chicks. During a peregrine falcon discovery tour on behalf of the Munich-based state society for the protection of birds Werner Borok succeeded in taking a photo of the two young birds. Max Kerscher, owner of the building, is delighted by this because some of the conversion work was planned specially with these rare birds of prey in mind.
