Ont-luik | Vullings de Moor
Heerlen / Netherlands / 2014
During the opening of the new cultural season; Cultura Nova, there are several art projects built in the city of Heerlen in the south of the Netherlands. The designs of the architects, designers en artists were inspired by the re-use of materials. Designers couple Vullings de Moor is responsible for one of the winning submissions ‘Ont-luik’: a pavilion partially made out of re-used window shutters.
Dennis Vullings and Lotte de Moor from the firm Vullings de Moor were inspired by the fact that the streets of Heerlen are defined by the use of metal shutters by many house owners. Lotte: “Even though these metal curtains can be seen as a barrier between public and private, there is also a poetical strength. In the early morning a sacred incidence of light awakes you. A moment of contemplation to start the day with refreshed strength.”
The installation Ont-luik is built up with re-used wooden beams and covered with debris of plate material and old shutters. “The changing incidence of light makes the pavilion the ideal space to have a moment of mediation”, according to Dennis. Besides a space for reflection, the structure can be used as a podium when opened.
The pavilion is one of the winning objects of the subprogram CityLiv during Cultura Nova. On the 30th of august it was opened for public.
