House improvement expands and refines the interiors

The renovation of a 34m² residence optimizes spaces for better access, ventilation and lighting.

This was a challenging reform in a small house in São Paulo to meet the needs of a young couple. With two floors, the house got a complete redesign for an expansion and better conditions of ventilation and lighting.

The first barrier was the lack of space for the furniture, since the priority was the circulation. "I designed all furniture for living room, kitchen and bedroom, as were necessary specific measures for each piece. Furthermore, the clear and neutral colors reinforce the visual impression of more space" - explains Cristiane Bergesch, the architect.

Another problem was the lack of space for a dining room. The living room had several accesses and the main door was taking up space to open. It was replaced by a sliding door, which expanded the original building area to 46m², joining the living room and the outdoors. A glass ceiling ensured a natural lighting for both spaces.

The owners wanted a comfortable, practical home, and also a place to receive family and friends. The outdoor area added the space needed for dining room and barbecue.

Two suspended cabinets made of demolition wood, one with granite countertops, serves both dinner and barbecue areas and can be used also for laundry. For this reason, a stainless steel tank was installed.

"Being a multipurpose space, I decided to escape the classic white laundry and chose the demolition wood for a rustic aspect, appropriate for the barbecue and dining areas" - explains Cristiane Bergesch.

Functionality and convenience in the kitchen

The compact 4m² kitchen has all the necessary items. The chosen oven, for example, is a cooktop. The sliding door made in special glass provides a mirror effect, hiding the kitchen interior when there is no light. MDF cabinets with white melamine finish contrasts with an wood panel.

Comfort at bedtime

On the second floor is located the master bedroom and the bathroom. The bedroom has a queen bed and mirrors in the wardrobe door to enlarge the space.

Lightining and sound

Built-in fixtures have independent controls and allow to create an intimate, formal or functional atmosphere, according to the moment. Cristiane also designed an audio system with in-ceiling speakers for every room.
