A market consultation organized by the municipality of Amsterdam has led to the design and build assignment of Studio PROTOTYPE. Studio PROTOTYPE was not only responsible for the complete design process, but was also the main contractor of the tribune stairs. The Zouthaven in Amsterdam has the potential to grow into being a public link where tourists from the cruise terminal find their way to the city center. The tribune is part of this link. The concept uses a wedge-shape, which guides the tourists naturally. The main shape provides two spaces to reside on both sides of the (functional) stairs. A place oriented to the sun and another place oriented to the water and view. On a detailed level the steps and wooden seating elements are subtly interwoven. Closed bilinga parts alternate with profiled aluminum parts of the stairs. The tribune does not stand out because of its expressive shape, or use of materials, but because of its simplicity and the way it is one with its surroundings and in which it offers value for future use of the place.
