Kindergarten Rodeneck | Pedevilla Architects
Villa / Italy / 2013
The innovative kindergarten at Rodeneck has been subject of a renovation project and succeeded the former original schoolhouse from 1879. Most of the existing walls were deliberately preserved and literally transformed into a perforated façade building with two varying shapes of windows.
The noticeable volume appears to be dissolved by these regular applied apertures, a reference to the mediation between a sizeable building on one hand and petite occupants on the other. Framed views into the mountain scenery, caused by this style of facade, even seem to be a part of the interior adventure playground.
While the staircase and the central positioned wet-areas are generating the building’s main core, the revolving inner space with its perforated facade is to a great extend customisable. The modest and structured interior layout gives young children the advantage of a comprehensible orientation, whilst having the liberty of explore and discover areas or room constellations by themselves.
The material and colour palette seems strictly reduced, since almost all surfaces of the building appear to be in basic white, just like an empty sheet of paper - spaces are trying to invite children for a playful and creative interaction. Felt-pads in primary colours then again introduce nice and cosy accents to the bay windows.
