In the heart of Burgundy, in a park of six hectares, is a chateau that was built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Inside, no sleeping princesses waiting for their prince charming, but Johan Bouman and his companion Pieter Franssens receiving guests from around the world to rest in rooms decorated by the Dutch duo. “We are lovers of old stones, very respectful of the past. We wanted to revive this house into an exultation of the twenty-first century while sharing our passion,” recalls Johan Bouman. The renovation campaign lasted nine years and still continues today with the dependencies. The two men are also enlightened collectors of art and design. Men of taste, they cohabit freely with their contemporary collection and antiques spread throughout the colored walls of the mansion. The quality of the refined decor, the friendly welcome and excellent service is well worth their entry into the Design Hotels famous network.
But not stopping halfway. The enterprising duo wishes to continue to share their passion, so they decided to create a design label. “We thought it would be nice to translate and make the unique atmosphere of the chateau available in a collection of design created by Dutch designers that we collect. People can take away a piece of the castle.” From the younger generation trained in Eindhoven, designers Carolina Wilcke, Daphna Laurens, De Intuïtiefabriek, Kranen/Gille, Jeroen Wand, Reinier Bosch and Roderick Vos have drawn small furniture, dining accessories, lighting, sconces, linen and even a suitcase in a limited edition of 25 pieces. Or fifty products in wood, bronze, glass and porcelain. The design is refined, elegant and poetic. “We put our soul into this house and in these objects. Each tells a story that is the result of a true artistic gesture. It’s very personal. This is our story. We want to make a real mark without limits… and create a platform for Dutch designers that can produce beautiful things and express the diversity of their creativity.” The fairytale of Château de la Resle has many more pages to fill.
