The Municipality of Oporto, as owner of the Bom Sucesso Market launched an international competition in order to renovate the old Market.
The Oporto based architecture company Ferreira de Almeida Arquitectos (FA.A) is responsible for the winning concept and was awarded this project commission, together with two local investors that took on their hands the construction and the operation of the new Bom Sucesso Market.
Rosário Rodrigues de Almeida, Nelson Almeida and Luis Ferreira de Almeida, the team leaders at FA.A, were able with the combination of their different skills to produce a innovative approach and concept to this decadent, but iconic building creating a vibrant and distinguished project.
The original building is a Public classified architectural construction since January 2011. Therefore the structure and the full “envelope” should stay untouched.
The solution included the setting of two sculptural “objects” on each opposites sides of the big interior space. One is the Music Hotel Melia with 85 rooms. The other one is a office building, partially occupied by the Foundation Manuel António da Mota, which includes an exhibition center and an auditorium.
Between these two volumes was created an interpretation of a contemporary market, that includes 25 shop units and 44 kiosks. The central area assumed a gourmet and festival ambiance with it’s exquisite products, restaurants and “tapabars”.
The Bom Sucesso Market re-opened to public on the 14th June 2013, fully leased and visitors testify that visiting this place or staying at the hotel became a unique experience.
