The restructuring of the three floors of an early nineteenth century building, with the possibility of a volumetric increase, is a chance to explore the expressive possibilities that, issues of extending an existing building and the contrast old/new, can generate.

The existing building, supported on the rock formations that exist in the area, is an expression of local building traditions: load-bearing walls mixed of brick and stone, sloping roofs with wooden structure, vaulted ceilings, metal railings galleries…

The new volume that represents enlargement, located north of the existing building, is configured as a slender and elemental prism. The relationship with the pre-existence is realized by contrast, in order to leave the past manifest and provide contemporary appearance to the new building.

The perimeter of the extension, which derives from the constraints imposed by the distances of adjacent buildings and the regulations, turns in a small volume (170 cm wide, 520 cm long and 980 cm height), that, in any case completely satisfy the requirements of different customers. As appropriate the new volume acts as warehouse/storage and protection for the entrance on the ground floor, bathroom on the first and second floor, and terrace for the apartment on the third floor.

The composition of facade elements are the result of a study of shadows and textures of the materials used; excavated lines in the plaster seek an alignment with existing building windows, metal frames that frame the windows evidence gaps and design volume shadows on the facade of the new building, smooth multilayer panels birch, coat the bottom of the building… in all these aspects has been given special attention in the works phase.
