A bookstore with a meeting place. This was the main premise of the architectural project of the bookstore Livraria Cultura at Iguatemi. More than just merely a place to shop, the store is inviting to stay and hang-out. Thus, we sought for visitors to not only find a book that they might be looking for, but rather that they remain there. The entrance is a 7.7m with glass and aluminum frames that are entirely recessed, leaving the passage open. On this floor, with more intimate dimensions, we find the audiovisual products, such as Blue Rays and a café in the garden. A set of escalators bring to the great span of the bookstore, reaching over an intermediate floor, which houses toys and comic books – the so-called Geek space. Then we arrive at the top floor where there is a large room, with tables and clubchairs, as well as 21m wide bleachers opening over the span. Inviting to leaf through the pages of a book or even to hold small concerts and lectures, this structure leads the visitors to the open mezzanine. The books encircle the space, supported by eleven large tables arranged orthogonally in the large room and on white stands on the peripheral areas. These shelves have built-in LEDs and delimit the space, as a cube internally clad with books. A multi-use room, especially for conferences – that earned the name philosophical café -, a room reserved for a garden and books for children, completing the program. The floor and the lining as well as the display tables are also of wood. The other planes use white laminates and distinguish the side walls from the rest. Glass hand-rails minimize the visual interference of these elements in the space, disappearing in the entire layout. Lighting is achieved by lines of light and completed by outstanding light in the center of the upstairs room. The configuration of the bookstore floor plan, especially with the open circulation, sought fluidity and spatial continuity. The architectural journey begins in a cozy space then arrives at a monumental area, living, where most of the products and visitors can interact with one another, where one can take a book and read a chapter even before purchasing it, where one can simply rest and watch the movement. We thought like this, with inviting and pleasant spaces that end up promoting a type of socialization among people, these are the bookstores of the XXI century. The program is the very life of the store.

Uma livraria como um espaço de encontro. Foi essa a principal premissa do projeto arquitetônico da Livraria Cultura do Iguatemi. Mais do que apenas um lugar de compras, a loja é convidativa para a permanência e convivência. Assim buscamos que os visitantes não apenas entrem na livraria, mas fiquem por lá. A entrada é feita por uma porta de 7,7m, na qual os caixilhos de alumínio e vidro são inteiramente recolhidos, deixando a passagem livre. Nesse piso, com dimensões mais intimistas, estão os produtos audiovisuais, como CDs e Blue Rays, e um café no jardim. Um jogo de escadas rolantes leva até o grande vão da livraria, perpassando um andar intermediário, que tem brinquedos e histórias em quadrinhos – o chamado Espaço Geek. Chega-se então ao andar superior onde há um grande salão, com poltronas e mesas, além de uma arquibancada de 21 metros de largura aberta para todo o vão. Convidativa para folhar um livro ou mesmo para abrigar pequenos concertos e palestras, essa estrutura conduz os visitantes para o mezanino aberto. Os livros envolvem o lugar, apoiados em onze grandes mesas dispostas ortogonalmente no salão e em estantes brancas na periferia. Essas prateleiras tem iluminação de led embutidas e formalizam a delimitação do espaço, como em cubo revestido internamente por livros. Uma sala multiuso, especialmente para conferências – que ganhou o nome de café filosófico –, uma sala para livros infantis e um jardim para crianças, completam o programa. O piso e o forro, assim como as mesas de display, são de madeira. Já os demais planos usam laminados brancos e distinguem as paredes laterais do resto. Guarda corpos de vidro minimizam a interferência visual desses elementos no espaço, desaparecendo no conjunto. A iluminação é feita por linhas de luminárias e completadas por pendentes no centro do salão superior. A configuração da planta da livraria, especialmente por meio de uma circulação aberta buscou a fluidez e continuidade espacial. O percurso arquitetônico se inicia em um espaço acolhedor, até chegar a um lugar monumental, vivo, onde ficam a maioria dos produtos e onde os visitantes podem interagir uns com outros, onde podem pegar um livro e ler um capítulo antes da compra, onde podem simplesmente descansar olhando o movimento. Pensamos que assim, como espaços convidativos e agradáveis que acabam por propiciar a sociabilização entre pessoas, são as livrarias no século XXI. O programa é a própria vivência da loja.
